Acc. to the manual clarity is localised contrast. What it seems to me is that it takes large areas of a similar nature, lets say the face, and applies a contrast, so different areas of brightness aren't similarly affected. Also yes LR is super slow, compared to say picasa. Not too sure what the aperture guys have to say about that.

Did anyone compare the processing time for RAW vs JPEGs?
LR is much more responsive when I processed my RAW compared to JPEGs. :dunno:
