Some more shots with A900 in Sydney

With a camera this weight LV is probably impractical... hahaha.. there I go again... but obviously, you find it invaluable.

Maybe I should say, my main lenses are 28mm f2, 35mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, 80-200 f2.8, so comparing them with Sigma lenses is a little unfair, but Sigma lenses don't give enough "feel" that I am looking for in a lens. But it is a very subjective view... so it doesn't really mean anything... Just me.

Well, if you can imagine the shots, top half will be 1 photo, and bottom half (like the rock area) is another one, just need to bring them together... that's what I do and use curve to increase the contrast... I think most of them are a little bit overdone though... nice for the effect, but a little overwhelming to my taste... just do it for fun.

The A900

Just my personal experience:

Took a short test drive at Cathay yesterday, and I have to agree with Hart that the A900 certainly feels sluggish when compared to the A700. AF seems to hesistate a little and the shutter lag is definitely longer than the A700 - one can actually "feel" it. But that is because I've been spoiled by the A700.

HOWEVER, full frame is beautiful  now my 50mm and 135mm are of a more useful viewing angle! Got really poisoned by it, but will hold out for a while until Sony irons out the firmware...

you're right. im a km7d user and when I tested the A900 last wk..its definitely a major improvement from my current cam. however A700 users might not want to upgrade just because its ff...A700 is already a very good cam. however I very much prefer the build of the A900.

this is  did u use an ND filter ?

Very nice landscape photos, thanks for sharing :)
Like the composition and the feel

Hello Agetan, dun mind i ask a noob question.

How did the "legacy" minolta lens or the new Sony lens fair on this super hi rez cam? Do u find anything limiting? Resolving power, colours, contrast, distortion, vignetting, etc good enuf for FF? What about the DT lenses, how do they perform? Satisfactory to ur standard? Thx :)

Gorgeous stuff there. I can imagine those landscapes printed to A0 & framed on the wall. MARVELOUS!!:thumbsup::lovegrin:

Colours are nice but images look more like paintings than photographs .......... :)

Thanks... I don't normally use filter other than UV filter...

As a matter of fact, I don't use filter on lenses which has max aperture larger than f2.8. As I find even using the best quality filter it still seems to be softer than without one. Maybe Just me.

I shoot average and use Photoshop to create ND filter effect to get the sky. I change a lot of manual work to more controlable Photoshop filter.

At the end of the day, it is about what you see in your pre-visualisation stage and using the gear/technique to get those.

Hart

Thanks for your comment.

So far old minolta lenses works really well with A-900... I was a bit surprise how well they perform as they are build so long ago. Prime lenses seems to be sharper and the details are amazing. 80-200 f2.8 APO G HS seems to work really well too.. the details are amazing too... I haven't got time to test any other lenses.

Vignetting seems to be the main issue with most lenses wider than 50mm, but since I add vignetting to my pictures, I don't mind it at all.

I am a very technical person when coming to lenses... in terms to distortion and things like that, I tend to ignore it if it is not too bad and still within the fixable range in Photoshop.

Unfortunately, I have not tested any of the DT lens yet, I only have 18-70 kit lens which I like a lot for use with APS-C DSLR... so not sure...

I bought with me Sigma 12-24 and Minolta 24-105 on this trip and they are both a very nice lenses to use. I prefer Minolta 24-105 over Sigma as 24mm is really very wide now and it is light, versatile and very sharp... you may want to hunt a copy of this lens... Sony is releasing (as per rumour anyway) the constant f4 G SSM version of this lens, but in all honesty I think this 24-105 may be good enough and the price will almost be guarantee better than the G SSM.

I have 2 copies of this 24-105, I like to have more than one if it is a nice lens.. both are very sharp and close focusing is very nice... look at the ramen shot, it was taken handhelp with indoor lighting wide open I think...

Colours are nice but images look more like paintings than photographs .......... :)

I create what I see in my mind before reaching for my camera to make an image and further my visualisation in photoshop.

So I am glad that you see my work as art piece... I like to create artwork with camera and photoshop...

Really enjoy the process and glad I can be in my own world when I take those shots.

So what camera system are you changing to now?....

Hart

As I have mentioned, A900 is not build for high speed shooting as such... A-700 is probably more versatile for your existing stuffs.

See with A900, there are a lot of upgrades needs to be done... one is computer power, two is the amount of cards you need, three the speed of the card and five the storage space of your harddrive.

A900 feels sluggish as compare to A700 mainly due to its big file size... in all honesty FF is another system all together...

If the price is justifiable for you, I don't see why not getting one, but as I use it for work, there are a lot of other considerations I made when evaluating a camera.

A900 is a nice camera... it can do more stuff than A-700, but in terms of speed, maybe due to its big file size, it just feel sluggish...

I am not critisize the camera is not good, but of course with everything else, it could be better. Most people has been spoiled by A-700. So A-900 will seems to be slow. But if you are evaluating the camera by itself, I don't see why not.

Hart

........... changing to A900 .............. :embrass:

As an A900 owner, I can attest to Agetan's comment that the A900 is another system altogether. Comparatively, A700 is like a BMW Roadster while the A900 is the 7 Series Saloon - all the comfort and luxury the spiffy road hugging Roadster cannot offer although blazingly fast.

Indeed, with the A900 quite a few lenses I have don't go well with it, being that some models were built for APS-C, and truly the older lenses I have (both SIGMA's and Minilta's) work VERY well on the A900.

So more spending to do; CZ lenses are the stuff now onwards. ;)

I have to agree with Hart's comments too. The A900 really is a whole new system, and you'll need to learn how to maximize your lenses all over again; but the potential results are worth it.

More photos from today's shoot...
