So what's next for DX?

i wonder will nikon continue to come out with DX semi-pro body like D300. or all future nikon semi-pro bodies are FF?

sorry.. i guess we are talking abt DX and FX not pro lenses :P sometimes OT

it's ok to talk about pro lenses. just that we need to hold our horses sometimes when we charged too fast. just dun hurt either parties, that's important. anyway it's just discussions and not war.;)

I think for me it's not the actual FF coverage that i want, it's the outstanding noise control! If they could make DX sensors as noise-clean as the FX ones, i really dont mind a DX camera.

Easier to control noise with large pixels, more dynamic range - hence larger sensor is the way to go.

When you go larger sensor, then you'll have to think of the optics to go with it also. ;p

very true. if you are heavily invested in DX and have the entire focal range more or less covered, you might as well consider staying DX for the time being.

I went FX because I thought I had the optics to go along with it.... Boy was I wrong!! ;p

i heard that there is a high end P&S camera coming with a DX sensor

nikon, supposed to be a D80 sensor

but this is information from the internet, so take it with a pinch of salt
but i would really like a D80 in a P&S body. 16-85 DX VR and a hotshoe for external flash

well since this 18-200mm VR so hot, maybe they will put this in instead...

fwah i will cry, then my d80 becomes obselete. hmmm maybe then i can justify upgrading to a d300!

so how is the image quality of the Sony R1 and Sigma DP1

i want a nikon one so that i can still use my external flashes

I think it will be the end of the line when the megapix hits 14 or 16 mp for DX sensors. Unless they wanna switch to 1.3 crop or something.
Shooting at high ISO will be a problem with a 1.5 crop sensor.

according to Michael Reichmann, the Sony R1 has decent image quality that is slightly inferior to DSLRs that are contemporary to it, and it still has its compact camera limitations... and his opinion on the Sigma DP1 is basically great image quality, badly designed camera... so the concept of a DX chip in PnS is certainly valid and good image quality possible... with the right camera design ;p

so all we need is for Nikon to do its thing and create a good implementation of a DX chip on a PnS... :)

So I stand corrected about DX sensor in a PnS.

But the Sony R1 weighs 1 kg (according to Luminous Landscape) with a fixed lens of FOV 24-120mm f/2.8-4. Now the D60 weighs 495 g. The AFS 16-85G DX VR f/3.5-5.6 weighs 485 g.

Why would someone who wants a DX-sensor PnS go for the Sony? It is not a PnS but an exact equivalent of a conventional DSLR!

OK, DP-1 is a different proposition. FOV 28mm f/4. Weighs 250g. Now we're talking. And the allure of the Foveon sensor...

But, it would be nice if it were a Nikon. But I am definitely tempted by the DP-1.
