Are you certain that Qala is up? I am connecting with pacific broadband but unable to reach qala.com.sg :dunno: yours can?

my neighbour company is using QALA leased line,
their internet back to normal liao -.-

seems most of the local ISP (Starhub, M1BB, QALA, even Malaysia's Tmnet) are okay already,
why Singtel/Singnet is still down???
higher cost come with a lower availability...sigh :thumbsd:

yap.. that puzzles me also. Lesson learnt from this incident, dun use the same ISP for both wireless and wired internet service.. just in case one is down.

izzit? i can connect QALA website http://www.qala.com.sg wihout any problem,
my company is using singtel leased line...

My company is also using singtel leased line with Qala broadband. I re-config with my personal pacific broadband account to access CS... ;p

Maybe I'll call them to see if there is something else that I need to do...

Maybe you can try to change the dns servers,
now I'm using Starhub's DNS servers:
202.159.1.68
218.186.1.88
218.186.1.58

heard from someone - treat this with a pinch of salt.

Starhub is a buyer of bandwidth, hence if it wants to switch due to its bandwidth through Taiwan going down, bandwidth providers will welcome it with open arms. Singtel is on the other hand a bandwidth provider. Now that it has problems, it can purchase bandwidth from its competitors, but I don't suppose that's going to be easy.

the starhub theory might hold water. there are actually two routes in/out of Taiwan. those cables severed are on the south side, while the few fibres on the north of Taiwan are unaffected. telcos that route via that link (or *ahem* have now bought bandwidth on that link) are able to provide connectivity to the US/ Europe via that direction.

normally customer will only consider (1) cost (2) next time when this happen again *touch wood* which provider can recover faster

Taiwan Earthquake Update: Status of Submarine Cables

digg this slashdot this

December 28, 2006 -- We have received some insider info on the status of damaged submarine cables and the progress made so far.
RNAL (Hong Kong Isolation):
The RNAL cable paths between Busan and TongFuk & Hong Kong - Toucheng Taiwan are still down, this has caused Hong Kong to be isolated from the RNAL cable.

The recovery ship is attempting to get emergency authorization so it can depart in next 12 hours to commence repairs.

APCN System 1:
Due to the multi cables faults in the region it is experiencing great difficulty in restoring the traffic via other cable facilities.

APCN System 2 Segment B5:
This cable is still down resulting in the Taiwan node being isolated.

SMW3 S1.8:
SMW3 Segment is still down and recovery vessels have been requested.

APCN2 Segment 7 (Tanshui - Shantou) & Segment 3 (Hong Kong - ChongMing):
Vessel CS Retriever will be mobilized for the repair of APCN2 S3 & S7

China-US segment W3 (Shantou - ChongMing) & Segment S1 (Shantou -
Okinawa/SLO):
The Cable is still down, no further information available at this moment.

FLAG FEA Sub-System 8 (Hong Kong - Shanghai - Korea):
The FLAG cable system is currently mobilizing a recovery vessel.

From the looks of it, its going to be a colder and lonelier Christmas for many geeks out there this season. On the up-side, reports have been trickling in that MMOG games like World of Warcraft, have not been affected by the internet disruption somehow...

Thanks Kichigai and Swakoo for the tipoff.

Just want to correct misconception. The Internet is huge and spans many countries, so technically the Internet is not down, only some parts are not reachable or slower because of the Taiwan earthquake. The cable breakage isolates Asia from the US continent and possibly Europe and Middle East. The rest of the Internet world could still be functioning fine.

As for VoIP especially in corporate use, it doesn't necessarily ride on the public Internet, but more typically on private network links to ensure quality and security. It's using IP technology but doesn't mean using the same Internet networks.

Call center staff cannot be reached is likely because they're flooded with calls and can't cope with the sudden surge.

Yeah, true. My company's corporate network uses both SingTel and Starhub solutions. Their global network helpdesk cannot be reached. I guess they are overwhelmed by the sudden surge.

Actually Starhub works in hand with NTT-Com (the biggest telecom provider in Asia). That would also explain why Starhub is able to regain its footing faster.

Thanks Mervlam for the useful info....
think will switch to Starhub or QALA once the contract expire
