seems most of the local ISP (Starhub, M1BB, QALA, even Malaysia's Tmnet) are okay already,
why Singtel/Singnet is still down???
higher cost come with a lower availability...sigh :thumbsd:

Maybe I'll call them to see if there is something else that I need to do...
Maybe you can try to change the dns servers,
now I'm using Starhub's DNS servers:
202.159.1.68
218.186.1.88
218.186.1.58

heard from someone - treat this with a pinch of salt.
Starhub is a buyer of bandwidth, hence if it wants to switch due to its bandwidth through Taiwan going down, bandwidth providers will welcome it with open arms. Singtel is on the other hand a bandwidth provider. Now that it has problems, it can purchase bandwidth from its competitors, but I don't suppose that's going to be easy.
Just want to correct misconception. The Internet is huge and spans many countries, so technically the Internet is not down, only some parts are not reachable or slower because of the Taiwan earthquake. The cable breakage isolates Asia from the US continent and possibly Europe and Middle East. The rest of the Internet world could still be functioning fine.
As for VoIP especially in corporate use, it doesn't necessarily ride on the public Internet, but more typically on private network links to ensure quality and security. It's using IP technology but doesn't mean using the same Internet networks.
Call center staff cannot be reached is likely because they're flooded with calls and can't cope with the sudden surge.
the starhub theory might hold water. there are actually two routes in/out of Taiwan. those cables severed are on the south side, while the few fibres on the north of Taiwan are unaffected. telcos that route via that link (or *ahem* have now bought bandwidth on that link) are able to provide connectivity to the US/ Europe via that direction.
Try using a proxy server for the time being. I'm on an Australian one, 165.228.131.10 port 3128
able to surf like normal again.
