Singapore Young Photographers Convention '09

To be honest, it was a really tough topic to shoot. Most of the shots exhibited good composition and technical work. But key point was 'relevance'. I believe most groups had images that were not relevent. Macabre (Suggesting the horror of death and decay; gruesome: Constituting or including a representation of death) is pretty hard to portray (and on a such a short notice). It was either hit or miss in terms of relevant images.

Yea man. I was like wtf? What is macabre, like my vocab is not that good yea so I dont understand. But that was the first time I shoot given a theme yea. XD
So it is a great exposure definitely.

Yeah.Upon reviewing at home,I found that my group's images were not disgusting/gory/grotesque enough. I guess it's harder than we expected to stick to the theme.

Oh well,hopefully they will revise their themes' difficulty next year or something.

I looked at my shots too. And think back, those photos of my friends that they took.
I think, also not bad eh, quite relevant to link bad.
But I guess, this theme, definitely need some b&w stuff, or underexpose pics to portrait the meaning of the theme man. And shiaaaat, my dslr doesn have b&w mode. -.-

Envy is a big issue amongst most people. It can even lead to violence.
Even your closed ones such as your relatives and friend may be a victim,
When envy has engulfeda person's mind, one could not control his actions.
This series of photos depicts a scene of a cruel act in result of his personal grudge.
Generally, our photos is about a guy who has a personal grudge against one of his friends.
Which sane mind will do such heinous act?

haha blame my hand for picking the MACABRE word from the envelope. haha

i didnt expect to have such theme tho.
my team, team 21, did had troubles on the theme but further brainstorming and familiarization of locations around Singapore, we picked our places.
well, we didnt travel far to the east, we just hop on to the train and alight at the next station and walk to our location.
at first we thought of shooting landscapes, which i think most did, but when we think again of the theme we decide to include human elements.
We suddenly came up with a story.
Honestly, we use only 2 cameras. I was directing the shots most of the time. haha
Since one of my team mates had a SB 800 we made used of strobe lighting. Had a few experience with strobes and we made use of the lights to bring out the emotions. Black and white really fit well in this theme. haha.
We only travel to two places and one of the challenging places were the old abandoned cemetery near bugis. It wasnt the supernatural stuff that was disturbing but the insects that were biting our legs. Super irritating. haha.
Well, i really think the other shot was really superb!
It was a challenging theme and had to squeeze our brains to the max!
Thank god our effort paid off in the end. 2nd prize was good enough. hahaha

Woah, I would say you deserve 2nd place or better. Really nice shots and all. Interesting write-up as well.

I think I really need to bring props next year,my initial idea was rejected because we couldn't find knives and a rope(for suicide).

haha, we didnt bring any props. we improvise our props, we picked it up from the ground. haha old decaying wood. lol.

haha I agree ! I made new friends and gained new experiences.

I was wondering,did the guy who act dead in your pictures get all itchy when he went back? The ground looks like home for many insects.;p

haha, all of us went back with mozzie bite marks. haha. we got ant bites too. so yeah. haha. surprisingly the place doesnt have much creepy crawlies but "creepy and digusting" foundings. hahaha

FYI definition of "macabre" according to dictionary.com:
1. "gruesome and horrifying; ghastly; horrible"
2. "of, pertaining to, dealing with, or representing death, esp. its grimmer or uglier aspect"
3. "suggestive of the allegorical dance of death"

I think my shots clearly represent "horrifying", "ghastly" and "horrible". Please enlighten me on how they are not "macabre" enough?

not exactly horrifying, but it's one aspect, so it is macabre technically.

You're right. It's more ghostly. But it's not ghastly (inspire shock by suggestion if death). The top 5 winners had images that were closer to the idea of death.
