Warthogs.... sigh.... the GAU8 cannons are impressive.

When there is a fight between a Policeman, Soldier and an Air force pilot... Policeman tends to lose out cos his longest ammunition is only about the length of his thumb.

The soldier can win the policeman anytime cos his longest ammunition is about an arm's length.

No one can win a pilot in size cos his shortest ammunition is about an arms length.

No wonder Girls love pilots.

holy big guns batman!

a few rounds from that monster the the beetle will be shredded to pieces. hehehe... you wouldn't want to get caught in the cross-fire would you? :bsmilie:

Of cos, having like another 20 Apaches or like 10 Thunderbolts in place of commissioning another 3 or 4 Infantry Battalions would be good too.
1 Apache/Thunderbolt have an equivalent firepower of almost a full Infantry Battalion. Woot.

read in some air defense magazine (can't recall which one) recently... mentioned that the USAF is thinking of converting the A-10 to have air-to-air capabilities. wow... are they replacing the F-18??? :bsmilie:

good to know that the A-10 has been around for ages and it is still serving well in combat. it's one of the ugliest combat planes around but heck... it packs a punch like nobody else

24 Eagles, 62 Falcons, 45 Tigers (at least according to Wikipedia).

I think what are really short of are dedicated Bombers, stealth recon & stealth bombers instead of Multi-role fighters.
Shld take out the Skyhawks completely and replace it with a dedicated Long Ranged Recon Stealth Bomber based overseas.

A-10's are equipped with 2x AIM-9 Sidewinders for self-defence. Relics from the Cold War.

No more, no less. 5 direct hits from the Avenger Cannon will wreck any Fighter Plane instantly.

A-10?? Too much firepower and too offensive, our neighbours would surely complain and bitch about us. (Esp during election time).

Ah-64 better opinion imho. ;p

Should have saved the money & used it for other more important things. Air superiority is still the US playground. Although it is very highly unlikely to happen, but if we go into war with a country like them, we sure will be screwed anyway. Want to buy the stealth planes? Want to buy the Commanches? Better be very very patient. I don't think they'll sell those to other countries any time soon.

But we won't go to war with US, they are our close ally ;)

Its the other countries here we should be worried about.. :dunno:

I tot we are going towards pilotless plans????

Officially a good portion of our air assets are not based in Singapore but scattered across the region and the world. The airspace is limited for flying so many aircraft right here so they fly where it is easier to train without scaring a jetliner full of passengers. The newspaper article said that half would be based in the US, I think.

Even in the US, the trend is moving toward single aircraft types performing multiple roles. The US Navy has retired the Tomcats and first generation Hornets for the Super Hornet.

Getting highly specialized aircraft like the A-10 is impractical - it can only operate where aerial superiority is guaranteed, otherwise it is a sitting duck for any fighter roaming around. It'd be blown out of the sky before the pilot could even bring the GAU-8 to point at the enemy. Even the Warthogs' own pilots concede this point. With Singapore having limited aircraft, it would be simpler for the aircraft to protect itself than require other aircraft to provide cover to accomplish its mission.

Dont believe whats stated in the media. The numbers dont usually tally. Its about healthy politics.

However, we do have an excellent team managing & operating a few fleet of fighter jets. More powerful jets like the f18 wont be necessary - imho - as this is only a tiny island to dash. I believe skill may be more important plus a good ground-to-air defence operation to guard the jetters.

How about retrofit our C-130 to a AC-130 Spectre type aircraft. Should be good as we can maximize our limited asset?

We are small fly but our sting is power. All this is to warn don't play with small fly.

lol! I watched NGC's documentary about the evolution of the machine gun. From the early Gatling gun to the tommy gun to M16 and the GAU Avenger. These GAU Avenger's round is 29cm long according to them  and 1 amour piercing round can take out a tank. 1 normal round can destroy a soft skin target.

Dat reminds me.

U know of the potential terror threats several years ago that most security forces around the world freaked out at the possibility of terrorists smuggling in manpack SAM missiles and shooting at civilian airliners?

Think we shld retro-fit ECM, Flare & Chaff system on our A380. No, wait. As an added measure, retrofit 2 AIM-9 Sidewinders, 2 AMRAAM and 1 GAU-8 Avenger. It will become The A380 - A Civilian Defense version.
