SIGMA SD-1 Flagship

How long is the local warranty here? The current price for the SD1 Merrill is pretty excessive here, not sure if it's worth it.

Local warranty is 2 years.
The current discounted price of the SD1M in US is about US$2,300 (Amazon, BP Photo Video).
Taking into consideration, freight charges and GST, I would say that the local street price of the SD1M is about there or even less. Price is actually not the more important factor when considering whether the SD1M is worth it or not. ;)

In Japan it's $2,000 and the 17-50mm kit is $2,500. In Singapore its over $3,350. thats a difference of over $800 and I'm there every second month anyway. Pretty sad price here, totally blown out of proportion.

The street price of the 17-50mm kit here is less than that. I know because I bought one.
The Japan price is good though except that I worry about the warranty aspect if I buy a non-warrantied set from outside Singapore. Another thing I worry about when directly local sets from Japan is that many brands like to fix the language of the menu system to Japanese for the sets meant for their local market and it cannot be changed to English. If Sigma does not practise this form of market discrimination, then it's good.

Then there is the cost of sending export lenses to Sigma Marketing here for calibration. Even though they said that the newer lenses are designed to work with the latest Foveon sensors, it does not mean that there is no longer a need to send the lenses in for calibration to the actual camera bodies they are mounted on. Even their service tech admitted to me that the new lenses still might need calibration to get the best out of them. I had to send both the 17-50mm and the 35mm f/1.4 in for calibration, free of charge of course because they are local warrantied sets.

But if you are going to Japan so frequently, you can always avail yourself to their warrantied servicing if necessary. Then this might not be an issue with you. ;)

Where is it less than $3350?. I asked pretty much all shops. They all quoted between $33xx and $339x.

Not many companies do that, only two, Sony and Panasonic

The one I missed, never bought anything there so far. Will give them a call. When did you buy yours?

About 2 months ago. You need to delete away some of your messages. ;)

May I ask how much they quoted you?

Better than what they quote now.

Still happy with your SD1m? Which lenses do you have?

For this kind of 'rare' gears, you would need to go down and ask for a quote personally to get the best offer. And like with any other shops, it's best to deal directly with the boss to get the best price. The boss there is Kevin. ;)

Still the latest new toy for me. Not much opportunities to shoot with it though... and when I did bring it out recently to shoot orchids, I forgot to put in the memory card. Luckily I brought the DP2M along. :embrass:
The new lenses I bought for the SD1M are the 17-50mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.4 and 70mm f/2.8 Macro. I already have the 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 and 105mm f/2.8 Macro which I bought for the SD14.

What CF card are you using for the SD1m? It's hard to find any reliable information if it's worth buying a Lexar 1000x CF card for the SD1 or if a cheap 600x card would be enough.

So you have decided to get the SD1M?
I think the cheaper 600x cards will do already. Mine is only the Sandisk Extreme CF. Lexar 1000x very ex. ;)

What speed rating has your card and do you think it's fast enough?

I'm still chotto undecided if I should invest into SA-mount lenses...

Sandisk don't use the x rating system. My Sandisk Extreme card is rated at 60 MB/s.
It is fast enough for me as I only take one shot at a time and don't take machine gun shots. Writing jpeg to card is very fast but writing RAW is not so fast.
If you get the SD1M, it is a given that you would have to invest in a bunch of SA-mount lenses. If you are only going to get 1 or 2 lenses, you might as well get the DPxM series as it would be better value for money and they are much lighter to carry around.

Okay, so yours isn't an UDMA 6 card I guess, those are labeled with 90MB/s. Do you have any info if the SD1 can actually make use of faster cards? I haven't seen any information from Sigma.

Yeah but there is no bright standard zoom for the DPxM cameras. ;)

The user manual only say Type I UDMA Compatible.
I should think that it could use higher speed CF cards as the controller is built into each CF card unlike SD cards which does not have builtin controllers and depend on that in the camera body.
