Sigma DP Quattro

Very interesting, am now thinking perhaps I should not have sold away my two Merrills...

Now waiting for reviews from MichaelLee and tomcat.

Should have kept the Merrills for good lighting... then get a Quattro for low light :bsmilie:

Here are some quick and dirty shots/crops for comparison. Merrill still seems to edge Quattro on detailsView attachment 3400View attachment 3401View attachment 3402View attachment 3403View attachment 3404 but once more light is let in, things get interesting.

Hmm... it seemed that Quattro seemed to be quite dark when set at the same setting as the Merrill, wonder was it because of the sensor or the processor.

When shot side by side, the OOC images out of the DP2Q and DP2M can look quite different because of differences in the respective camera's choice of default exposure, contrast, sharpness settings and differences in white balance (DP2M is colder with more magenta cast while DP2Q is warmer and more natural). Then during RAW processing with SPP, SPP 6 applies more noise reduction to DP2Q RAW files while none to DP2M RAW files.

With post-processing to equalise the image quality settings between the Quattro and Merrill images, they would approach each other in image quality. Also, users have found that with different SPP settings, the Quattro images would look more like the Merrill ones except that the higher resolution could actually translate into more details in the Quattro images.

The dilemma here is for users who do not want to do any post processing at all or prefer to shoot JPEG only. Then the differences between the Quattro and Merrill images would be quite visually significant.

Hi bro platysma,
Can I check the 2 photos u took, the native colour is so diff bet the M and Q?
The M seems brighter.

No significant improvement it seems, my interest in the Q is starting to go south.:( However I will still give it the benefit of the doubt, pending further and more detailed reviews.

I wonder if they will implement the "Try before you buy" scheme here.

Hmm... food for thought. Staying put till I get to read more reviews and of course from your reviews too, then head down the shops to try try a bit... before making a decision. I have been wanting a good non-interchangeable lens camera for many many months now... been bouncing from G1XmkII to RX100 to NX mini back and forth... now Merrill and Quattro became two more contestants... Woohoo!

To be honest, they look different because I took the lazy route. The image was shot in natural light using aperture priority so the shutter speeds were different. However, my initial impressions are that the Merrill excels at picking up details in more consistent fashion than the Quattro. The Quattro whilst more versatile is a little less consistent. I still love the dynamic range of the Quattro though and the images it produces seem to have more depth compared to the Merrill. I await the pro reviewers on this forum to give their expert opinion :)

Always been interested in the Sigma DP series. Popped by TK Foto yesterday and they had one set of the DP2 Quattro in stock. Played around with it a bit, but couldn't accept the form factor of the camera. Its a bit tricky to put in my bag efficiently. Price was SGD1350 retail. I guess I will go look for cheap 2nd hand DP2M :P

I hope they will release a dslr with the new sensor soon. :)

It appears to me that with every new DP series, the battery is not backward compatible.
I hope Sigma does not abandon the supporters by not supporting the batteries of the older cameras.
The DP1/2/3M are afterall good lenses with not so good bodies.
Sigma, if you are out there, do you have a response to this query?

Silly camera design, and 3 options makes it worse.... lol

This is single focal length fixed lens camera like the Ricoh GR and similar cameras. Not everybody like a particular focal length and so it's good that users have choice of the focal lengths to choose from to meet their needs eg landscape shooters would buy the DP1Q instead. As for the shape, I personally like it. It is easier to hold more securely and I'm less likely to drop than I would the DP2M or the Ricoh GR.

Ergonomic of a camera is more of a personal preference. I like the design, but it looked abit too futuristic and I couldn't imagine holding one out without lots of head turning to stared at it. I prefered my camera to be a bit more discrete... so I can take shots wouldn't people checking me out.

Due to the large sensor, it is not easy (not impossible, but not easy) to build fix zoom lenses and still maintain the relatively small size of the camera, thus the many different version of the camera... each with one particular focal length catered for different needs and wants of the photographer like what Tomcat had pointed out. And it was definitely not stupid.

Was hoping actually to turn some heads when I was using the DP2Q but unfortunately no one noticed leh. :(
