Sigma announces 35mm f/1.4 DG, 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS, 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS lenses

Mine was good straight from purchase. No back or front focus problem. It is considerably better than 35L

dropped by sigma again today to play with the 120-300 sport. This time there was no haze, but the sun wasn't shining either, overcast and grey skies. however I got a chance to bring the lens downstairs by the road to test out the AF tracking accuracy of the lens.

many thanks to the guys from Sigma Singapore especially kai for letting me molest the lens and try some shots while considering whether to buy or not to buy.

first off some images of the lens.

When I was there, I asked the technician to let me play with the sigma dock to calibrate the Custom functions, and it was quite cool.

I set C1 as AF accuracy priority, and C2 as AF motor speed priority.

I must say the AF speed when using C2 was super fast! comparable to the canon L lenses. Great for one shot AF but not so great for C-AF tracking as I got quite a couple of OOF shots in between C-AF bursts.

For accurate C-AF tracking, C1 worked much better with higher hit rates, say about 7/10 shots were sharp to me with 2-3 where the AF was off.

review by the digital picture is up.

lens seems to do well bare without TC, but the image comparisons with 1.4 and 2x TCs look poor to me.... wonder what TCs the site was using?

any CSers got this sports lens yet and care to share sample images with Sigma TCs or canon TCs?

Anyone owns the Sigma 35mm f1.4? Hows ur experience with this lens. Recently I bought this lens. I noticed that very small movement or if you begin to focus and refocus on ur subject the focus seems to be soft. Whereas if you were to just point (focus) and shoot the image is tact sharp. It just give me a feeling that the lens is unable to refocus accurately if there is a very small shift of the lens. Not sure if you know what I am trying say. It seems like one need to know how to "operate " the lens if not it may deem as a focus shift problem.

hmmm....

if you focused and refocus your subject, it is your user error as the depth of field is very shallow at F1.4. Choosing the correct AF point is the right way of getting the image sharp. Otherwise, you can practise your focus and recompose your subject linearly without shifting front and back.

Hi Ricleo, the strange thing is when I tried my friend's Canon 24mm f1.4 it does not display such characteristics. No problem in focus and refocusing. The lens will read even with very small movement. Just my evaluation. Like I mentioned, this may be the same characterisitcs for sigma lens which for which people may think its quality issue.

What the aperture value when using both lenses? The depth of field will be different for both 24mm & 35mm lenses at a same aperture.
When focus n recompose, often user will just move n tilt n camera which cause the focus distance to change. If use a small aperture value (wide open), eg set at f1.4 or 1.8 etc, high chance it be out of focus.
Sometime the subject move (front if back) a tiny bit also will cause the focus to be out.

Lens dun read movement. It the camera focusing system telling the lens what to do. Both lenses used on same camera with same setting?
Single focus shoot?

24mm is wider. Bigger DOF. Maybe that why. Maybe u try again with 50 1.2 at near min focus distance :bsmilie: and see if it works.

so anyone with this new sports lens at all?

I have a 150-500 OS HSM that is actually quite sharp at F6.3 on my 1D and 6D. Wondering if it is worthwhile upgrading to the 120-300 Sport + 2X TC to get a 600mm F5.6, whether the extra stop of light and AF performance is good enough to justify the additional costs.

the luxury of having 120-300 at F2.8, 168-420 at F4, and 240-600 at F5.6 with OS and HSM is tempting

It is lol. Heck, even with 35mm f/1.4 if the subject is say 1m away you can still easily focus and recompose without issue.

Just always have an idea how deep your DOF may be.

Just saw this great deal on ebay from a seller who seems reputable (good ratings and many dslr/lens items on sale)

Sigma 120-300 Sports Canon for AUD 3049 (SGD $34XX). Even after 7% GST this looks like a good price at about SGD 36XX.

2 canon mounts available and 3 nikon mounts. Not sure if it is a pricing error or real good value deal hehe.... compared to about 4200-4300 in SG shops.

hehe i just received my 120-300 OS HSM sports lens! :) ordered from the ebay seller and got it delivered by fedex within 2 days! The lens arrived perfectly boxed.

initial impression is still that it is a darn heavy lens! don't think i can shoot handheld for extended periods with this, especially with 2x converter attached.

performance with the canon 2x III extender and 1.4X II extenders were fantastic wide open! very sharp lens hehe....think it was a great deal!
