Hi all, sorry to ask a noob question, is it that all the sigma 30mm lens, grey or not grey, need calibration? I'm wondering if I should get in HK to save that $200.But If the lens by default needs calibation, it would make sense to get in SG correct? Thanks in advance!
Anyone tried this on a FF body......?
The grey set here is much cheaper in HK and some has shop warranty. You do not really need to calibrate it if it fits your body... This fits my Canon 60D perfectly, but not for some other models.Hi all, sorry to ask a noob question, is it that all the sigma 30mm lens, grey or not grey, need calibration? MrKang said:Hi all. I just got mine from DD electronics. Although its not a local model, but its damn cheap. sgd 502 (if pay cash -2% more), comes with 1 year warranty from the shop though. I dont know if its just my lens or its the sigma. The lens are not that sharp , compare to my cheap Canon 50mm f1.8. Its just night shot since i only got it just now. No AF problems though. Work just fine, tried out with live view AF, but HOW do u upload photos here? It keep on error-ing.
Anyway anybody have sharpness problem with this lens? THanks!

Well, i've test in all aperture, but 1.4 is where i wana see the focus. Test chart test coming up in a while.

I've upload the Test photos here. Focus from the pen until the back wardrobe. Not in proper arrangement, but you still can see the focus object, from pen, to tissue, newspaper wrap, watchmen book, fan, and then the wardrobe. all this is done with live view AF.
Thanks a lot.
are u using auto focus? I recommend u turn it off and choose manual (centre) focus so that the test result can be more accurate.

It can't be…I also have the 50mm F1.8 and the 30mm F1.4 is definitely sharper and better than the 50mm F1.8. Just don't shoot at 1.4 if you don't have to..This lens works best at F2 and above…In fact the 50mm also won't be good at f1.8…most lenses don't work it's best at it's widest aperture anyways...
MrKang said:Yeap. Just dont shoot f1.4 if you dont need to. But the reason i go for sigma is 1.4, or else i would have gone for the better reviewed canon 28mm f1.8.
Anyway, i went and replace the lens, good ppl at the shop by the way. The lens i have now AF better than the one before. The one before have a bit of front focusing issue, i notice when i was shooting my toys. AF point on the toys behind, but the focus the toy 1 inch in front of it.
But what i want to say is at 1.4, AF still not as sharp as i expect it would be. Well i think its all depends on how you handle the lens, where focus, and more else. If you do manual focus, pics will be superbly fine of cuz. But hey, 1.4, the bokeh is AWESOME. Haha.
So i wouldnt give a conclusion yet if its replace-able or its gonna stay in my bag.
Gonna have more pics coming up after this weekend holiday. Hopefully its a lens to keep. Cheers.
Hi guys,
I've been wanting to get this lens but i have no experience in buying lenses so i've a couple of questions to ask:
1) Since this lens is for cropped bodies only, will it be 30mm or 48mm equivalent?
2) How do you all actually test for a sharp copy? I've heard of newspaper and Focus charts, so do you guys actually always bring that many stuff to test the lenses?
e.g Laptops/netbooks + newspapers + coke cans + focus charts + tripod.
3) If so, what are some Points & Tips to take note of when giving it a test-drive?
I saw the a/m where you test out the full aperture range, is there any other things?
Also, how do we determine whether is there front/back focusing issues, are there rough guidelines to follow? (actually, i don't really know what exactly does front/back focusing mean) ><
4) If lets say the shop is very VERY crowded (especially so during weekends), after taking photos with your cam do you go outside of the shop and find some place to sit so as to view the pictures then go back into the shop to get the lens?
Sorry for asking so many questions, i really want to get this lens badly but i don't wish to just enter a shop knowing nothing about testing lens, buy it, and then have to go back to Sigma for servicing/calibrations :s
1. It will be 48mm when mount on a 1.6x crop sensor.
2. I only bring my own camera and test shoot it at anything(the box, a piece of paper, my friend etc.)
3. Front focusing:

The black line should be in focus but end up is the things in front that becomes focused. Back focusing is just the opposite.
4. Nope. Just shoot, zoom in and determine on the spot.
Phew, i was worried it was gonna be like Canon's EF-S Lenses, where 30mm = 30mm with no crop factor.
Btw, do you only use the Focus chart with the lens wide open? At what aperture can we stop using the Focus chart?
Thanks much!
