Bought this lens over the weekend. Love the bokeh, but somehow i don't quite find the lens sharp. hmm not too sure if its just me. Attached picture without PP, just slight cropping and resizing.

Hi there,

Perhaps you can try shooting at a higher shutter speed? The above image does seem "unsharp" but the effect can be that drastic especially i the image has not even been blown up yet.

Perhap above 1/30?

Cheers~

Hi Snapper,

Ok i have just took another picture. This time round its a Canon magazine and I focus it on Extender EF 2X II. Do take alook at the pic below. It looks like the auto focus is pretty much there, doesn't have any obvious front/back focussing problem. I never do any PP or cropping, just resizing it. Is this sharp or not so sharp huh? Your advise is kindly appreciated. I hope its just my eye, but so far whatever i took with this lens seems soft and "unsharp".

I got my sigma 30mm calibrated for the second time as i wasnt satisfied with the sharpness when wide open, well the technican told me that this time round he set the focus for the lens to infinity.. not quite sure what that meant.. but here is a picture of my grandad shot at f/1.4 ;p

wah.. now i am curious to know what he meant by setting the focus to infinity! haha..
this pic looks pretty sharp to me!

it looks sharp to me, but maybe it doesn't look that sharp to you cos your focus looks like it was on the upper lip to nose area, and not on the eyes. try focusing on the eyes for portraits instead yup(:

yup ur right.. actually i was trying to get both eyes in focus so i focused onto the nose bridge instead =/ but it seems that at f/1.4 the DOF is really very shallow so its prob impossible to get both eyes in focus when im shooting so upclose... anyway the sigma is really centre sharp wide open.. definately a keeper... just gotta practise more on the shooting techniques i suppose ;)

Anyway talking about focusing on one eye.. heres another shot at f/1.4 of my dog... focus right onto her eyeball...

hi, why not sigma 20mm instead ?

hello all! just got this lens today after wanting it for ages :D

anyone of you using it on a nikon body with no in-body motor? eg, d3000 or d5000? when i tried to use manual focus, it looked sharp in the view finder but when i snap the pic everything is blur, or the focus is off.

when using AF, it seems fine.

is it cos the lens isn't communicating with the cam properly cos it's sigma+nikon, or sth i'm not doing right.. or the lens has some problem? =/

IMO, when manual focus, best to use live view.Because viewfinder is too small for you to be sure it is really sharply in focus. But d3000 don't have live view right?

i'm on a d5000. haven't tried MF on liveview yet tho. the AF on liveview is so crap, i don't use it at all. shall try it out to see if it works.

for now it's quite a hit and miss thing for me =/ sometimes the focus is totally off even though it looks sharp, but sometimes it's just abit soft. not sure what's happening man..

You can try to use spot focus and choose the focus spot. I used to use the centre focus spot to focus lock then recompose. Found out the depth is so shallow that during the recomposure the focus will be off.

anyone has any idea which shop has stock for this lens? :)
intend to buy it but CP has no stock at the moment.
thanx in advance

tested on a tripod f/1.4 @ 1/60 ISO 800. Soft wide open but i guess that's normal. Focus was on the middle panasonic battery.

I feel since you use tripod, why not set ISO at 100 / 200. To me it looks grainy more then soft...

well... i was doing comparison shots from f1.4 to f5.6... by the time it reached f5.6, shutter speed dropped a lot... moreover i don't have a shutter release cable and i was too lazy to use the timer... so i just pushed up the ISO...

anyway, just tested the lens during the day and i've decided that this lens is tack sharp at f2.8 and super-sharp at f4.0... i'll probably use 1.4 and 2.0 if shutter speed drops below 1/30...
