unbelieveable, this wonderful lens stil able to focus under nearly dark environment . the only light source is the lcd tv.

iso3200, f1.4 , focusing point is his eye.

Great lens indeed.
Mine came with inconsistent focusing. Its not just front or back focusing all the time, otherwise, i would have been able to do the micro adjustment on my body. Sent to Sigma service centre, great service there. Other's took 2 hrs for calibration. Mine took 2 days. Cos needed new firmware from japan. Got the lens back, tested a few shots, chatted with the friendly technician... and the rest is all history.

Just got my copy from Tin Cheung! SGD $520 with 1 yr warranty...

initial shots look ok without front or back focusing...

good stuff... feels damn heavy tho!

Just called up sigma svc centre. It seems like they no longer do calibration for free. Was told to bring all proof of purchase and have to pay 80 bucks for it if I don't have it.

Seems abit inconsistent with what I gathered from this thread.

I am bringing my lens for calibration tomorrow. Thought to show/share my experience on this lens.
focus is at right nose hole of momo, at least with my lens it start giving sharp image from f/2.2.

You mounted on tripod? Have tried Manual focus?

All images are handheld (unfortunately my tripod head can only mount camera with lens collar, wimberley head), no i didn't tried manual focus. Maybe later today i will try Manual focus.
Does it mean 1.4 can only be achieved with help of tripod?

From my understanding
sometimes (not always) mis focus can be easily seen as not sharp.
When shoot f1.4, the DOF very very shallow, slightly mis focus will become 'soft' (since the spot / the area you suppose to focus become out of focus, thus being translate into soft)
So, using a tripod is safest.

Also, if you able to manual focus sharply, this can also mean the focusing drive (motor?) is not 100% perfect, but the lens is still sharp. I learn this from DPreview about the Tamron and Sigma 70-200 f2.8, one of the lens (forgot) is actually very sharp then the other, but since it cannot Auto focus properly, thus seems to become not sharp.

No, handheld also can achieve. Just that using a tripod helps to reduce human errors.

Was thinking of sigma 24-70 Hsm f2.8. But guess like many of you i was posion beyond cure by this thread and photo shared

You may try to take photos using your kit lens, set at 30 mm focal length. See if you like the field of view. then try 50 mm. See what can you achieve, what is your limit.

To me, 50 mm a little tight on 1.6 crop. For outdoor portrait I'm fine with it, for indoor I feel tight.

Totally agreed, Borrow my friend's nikon 50mm F1.8 and try shoot children in child care center. From my view 50mm is too tight for indoor use. As for out door. think only suit for half/full body protrait.
