Here's a review on Sigma 18-250mm http://www.photoreview.com.au/reviews/cameraaccessories/sigma-18250mm-f3563-dc-os-hsm-lens.aspx Seems like a pretty good lens, the HSM is very tempting...

Thks for the linkz!

Finally, I bought my lens yesterday after much consideration. I tested both the lens and my final choice is the Sigma 18-250mm. I like the solid build of this lens and it HSM auto focusing can feel is much faster and smoother compare to Tamron. One thing I dun like is both lens does creeps at a certain points when pointing upwards or downwards. Tamron is a sudden drop where else Sigma one creeps slowly (maybe is a newer set). Dun take words from me,
go try out yourself. :)

I will try to post some pics here once I tests it with my 500D.

Hi kikiaw, mind telling us where and how much you bought for?

price is quite close to the Tamron 18-270, still contemplating which to get... gotta test it out at the shop one of these days too.

due to budget..I got a sigma 18-200 instead..

Hope you like your new lens, the diff is only 50mm still not too much apart. If your image at 200mm is sharp, just do a image crop to 250mm and it shld be equivalent quality as mine. :)

I realised till now, i still cannot get really sharp image for my 500d, even on my kit 18-55...is it due to the cloudy skies over here since I came in late May ? (in japan now..)

There is a thread by "mindfulness" http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529004 complaining about soft images from 500D and 55-250mm. The conclusion from moderator was it is more of a user problem rather than the equipment. The main issue was focus point selection in "mindfulness" case. I think 500D+kit 18-55 should be able to produce sharp images with the right settings. I'm pretty satisfied with the sharpness from my 500D+EF-S 18-200mm combo.

To TS, lens creep is a common(inevitable???) problem for superzoom lens, due to the amount of glasses and construction. For me, I learn to instinctively turn to lens back to 18mm after shooting and lock the lens with zoom lock. It will become 2nd nature after a few tries. How much faster is the Sigma HSM AF on 18-250 compared to Canon 18-200? I have a Sigma 50mm F1.4 HSM and the AF is fast, quiet and a pleasure to use.

Hi twinrongs, this is what im doing also when ever is not in use, turn back and lock it.. think all with superzoom lens will do the same too. As for the AF speed, I only tested on the Tamron 18-270 and Sigma 18-250... not sure abt the Canon 18-200. Sigma 50mm F1.4 is a vry gd lens, Thot of getting one too.

show us some photos of your 18-250? I wanna know if there's any vignetting at the 200 or 250mm end...
I went for a walk around the neighbourhood and took some photos...

my finding, with OS, it's not necessary sharper..some of my manual focus are sharper than OS, and for a moment, I thot my OS is spoilt...so it's true that OS does make the picture softer..

and man, the lense is heavy ! and zooming is tight at some turn...is it better to have a loose zoom or a tight zoom? any method of "oiling" or just need just to season the lense?

Be careful of what you're asking for, a loose zoom means a BIGGER zoom creep issue. Personally, I dun mind a little bit tight on the zooming.

I've a Sigma 50-150 and till now not much problem. After hearing of the new sigma 18-250, i'll probably see whether cheaper to get in Taipei since i going next month. 3rd party lens are cheaper in taipei as my understanding. I last bought my sigma 50-150 at around SGD$820 newly launched.:)

wow....all your photos very good...esp the Ants...and all your subject in every photos are in focus...the problem I have with taking macro on flower is, slight wind will kick the focus out...and rather tiring to take macro...

I hope I can learn your technique of stability...

Thks for the compliments!

Im still a newbie to DSLR. To be frank.. most of my entire shots got like more then 60% was discarded duel to either image not nicely captured, OOF, too bright or too dark. I still have a lot to learn to master the technique and skill... is going to be a long long way for me. :)

Gd that u r still in Japan, is a vry nice place to shot... Colorful scenery. :)

FYI, i've just got the quotation for the sigma 18-250 in Taipei. It's around NT$17,300 which is about $800+ and MS color quote me $975 earlier.
