Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM

I thought it might be shaper and better performance in low lights.

instead of a lens upgrade option, does adding an external flash solve the problem? I am thinking that underexposure may be your main issue?

Large aperture doesn't solve all problem, it actually creates a couple more. One such is the thin dof.

But still, if the use of flash is prohibited, large aperture is useful. And if you are shooting in very low light, sigma lens have a slight problem with the focusing as compared to 17-55. if low light focusing isn't very interest important, tamron is a cheaper option. Sigma's performance is somewhere in between tamron and canon...so is the price.

If sharpness is everything to you, get a prime lens... Usually prime lens are way sharper than zooms, but for a zoom like this sigma, I find it ok..

To me, sharpness isn't everything... Working on better composition and other skills is proven to be more useful in the long run. Thou I usually don't think straight when I was considering to get new "toys"

Congrats bro! You'll never regret it. It's a great lens alternative to the much pricier nikon/canon version.

Len schedule to be deliver on coming monday but due to my urgency, tony personally hand carried and deliver to me yesterday.
Good service from texhnogadget.

Hi,did Sigma Singapore have the answer about the OS?

I noticed this one too. Even when you shoot with OS off, View NX (of Nikon) in EXIF data shows your VR is ON.... I think this is not a big deal to me.... I was at the sigma service centre yesterday for my calibration with my D7k, I ask them this but they cannot answer. They just told me they ask Sigma Japan about this and they are waiting for the reply. The Sigma Singapore receptionist (the auntie) told me they will call me if they have the answer.

anyone use this in D7100? hows the output?

This lens stays on my 7D about 80% of the time... it's a great walkabout that offers excellent flexibility!
I never ever looked back since swapping my Tamron 17-50 non-VC for this!

Dear all, wanting to ask if I purchase from DDE, how do i actually do a warranty claim (if need be)? I have an offer for 6mths old Sigma for $700 and advise shld I go for a gray set cost $800+

Might I suggest you snoop around this forum for the latest news about DD Electronics.

If going for a grey set, can consider technogadgets instead of dde.

Dde have closed down their operations in sg and operating from Malaysia now iirc. There are a couple of other unpleasant news about it too. Do a search and a couple should appear.

Hi Skystrike, thanks for the advise. I was recommended by my friend about DDE but i din know they dun operate in Sg anymore

Newbie here.. pls help..

Is this lens good for photoshoots?
Does this lens work with sigma's 1.4 teleconverter ?
For outdoor photoshoots, are reflectors enough for lighting?

If u read the reviews, it should the best amongst third party lenses. Moreover at around $530 only, it shall be a value for money fast lens with os.

I think if u use teleconverter it will become f4 instead of f2.8

No. It is among the best, but not the best third party lenses... there are no the best. Sigma 17-50mm os is no doubt a very good lens but to say that it is the best... it is simply not true.

To give you a better example,

http://francoismalan.com/2012/04/fast-sigma-vs-tamron-stabilised-17-50/

Conclusion (sharpness):

Both lenses have good sharpness and contrast when you stop them down to F4.0, and perform excellently at F5.6+. This is true for all focal lengths. Barring focus issues or camera shake you can be confident that your image will be decently sharp from corner to corner if you stick to these apertures – dramatically so at F5.6.

But how do these two perform at their maximum aperture? After all, you don’t buy an f/2.8 lens only to use it at f/5.6+ do you? 1. Here the Tamron performs well at the wide end (17mm), but things get a bit fuzzy at the the telephoto end (50mm) of the zoom range.2. The Sigma showed almost exactly the opposite performance as the Tamron. 3. At the wide end (17mm) the Sigma’s focussing was intermittently unreliable (more about this later), and even when AF worked correctly the result it was softer than the Tamron. 4.At 50mm f/2.8 the Sigma came into its own and delivered better sharpness and contrast.

So as you can see, the Tamron 17-50mm VC

1. Perform better at 17mm
2. had better AF accuracy and reliability as compared to Sigma at 17mm

The Sigma, however performed better at 50mm.

Just from that review, I can say that Sigma is not the best...

Sigma_Tamron_bokeh.jpg

A look at the bokeh by both lens also showed that the bokeh produced by Tamron lens was cleaner and in my opinion better looking than the one by Sigma which had strange swirling pattern in it.

Although the author picked Sigma over Tamron in the end, but if I am to choose and from the result achieved, I would have go for the Tamron.

This lens is good for photoshoots.
This lens should be able to work with Sigma's 1.4 (not too sure though)although do take note that there will be a bit of degrade to the IQ with the TC (assuming it can be used.)
For outdoor photoshoots, it depend on the condition and what you are shooting, where you are and so call and so for. I would not say that reflector is enough, you might need flash too.
