Sigma 150-500mm in action

Thanks. I just got mine yesterday. Took some photos of a Sunbird with it. Quite a challenge as the bird is really small and the distance is a little far.

Thanks for sharing. I will try mine this Sat :D Hopefully in a soccer traning session. :bsmilie:
Or, wait till my next bird watching trip.

Tried one copy at Cathay yesterday. Found that the VC of this lens kicks in pretty slowly, about 2 secs delay or so. However once kick in, it is effective. AF speed is not very fast. And sharpness at 500mm is slightly better than bigma. Interestingly, the sharpness at 500mm is comparble with my 300mm f2.8 lens with stacked converters at f8! Unless you are printing the photos big and not picky about the AF, delayed VC , if not i guess it a steal. :) Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi, anyone has any advice on best way to carry a camera mounted with this heavy len or others like Sigma 50-500mm len? My worry is that the camera strap and metal holding ring might not be able to take the combined weight. Thanks.

I've got one on order. Enough research done.

Noticed your SmugMug profile was updated with this lens - so how do you like it so far?

I thought you have something near this range already? Wasn't the Canada Goose shot at 400mm?

Mounted on monopod using tripod collar.

Other than that, one hand under the lens. You have two other things to worry about if you use the strap alone : one long lens that knocks into things, and your neck.

Thanks knpan for helping me to identify the unknown bird to be a Pacific Swallow. :-) Thanks lennyl for sharing another way of carrying the camera and len in walking around. Do you guys think it make sense if we tie a strap around the tripod collar and using carry the combined camera and len via this strap? Thanks

To all who posted here, thanks for the insightful comments. Just brought the 150-500mm today. I am now a happy owner too.

By the way, just to check, the manual reads: 'Be sure to turn the OS switch to off position, before attaching or detaching the lens to the camera'. I've never turn the VR switch to off for my Nikon lens before. Is this necessary for the Sigma lens?

If I don't, will it damage then lens?

I forgot to turn off the OS switch a few times, but did not seem to have problem. But for precaution, I will remember to switch it off first. ;p

Anyway, congraturation ! I think you will like this lens. :D

Hi Guys,
Do update your feedback, hoping to buy this lens too :)

Hi I have added you to my contact list in Flickr too... Do you take birds ? I am a member with Nature Society. Used to do so in the past.

BTW, where did you buy the lens ? :bsmilie:

Does this lens come with oly mount? Couldnt find any indication on the web.:dunno:

I am not sure about it. But I bought the Nikon mount for my D300. Hope Sigma has one for Oly.

I have not shoot birds before, but hoping to venture into this area with the new lens. :bsmilie:

I brought the lens from MS colour. The price is close to the S$1650 (including GST) which you highlighted in your earlier post. =) Wow, the filter is about $100 for just a pc of UV glass. No choice, LL.

Oh I thought you order from HK. I got mine from HK's Tin Cheung Camera. I got the Hoya filter from Lords at $95...very expensive but rare.

Hey all, I have the 'smaller brother' to this lens, the 120-400mm OS. :)

Seems like the OS function of these Sigma lenses are not as straightforward to use as Nikon's VR or Canon's IS. It takes awhile for the OS motor to 'stabilize'. When taking fast movers like planes or birds this delay is quite important.

Anybody have tips to share how to best shoot with these lenses, especially at the max tele zoom?
Anyway, here are some of my shots taken with the 120-400mm.

hi,

i am choosing between this and Nikon 80-400mm VR.

Question on this lens:
will the lens grows in size as it is zoomed from 150mm to 500mm?
i meant will its length remain the same (constant) or will it extend out like the 80-400mm Nikon?

Thanks!

It will extend out when you increase from 150mm to 500mm. If you plan to shoot birds, think 500mm will have better reach.

With HSM, the autofocus should be faster too. I went with 150-500 coz I read a few reviews that the 80-400 is slow in autofocusing and more suitable for shooting static objects.
