I thought they already improved the SDM, that's why I bought my DA*16-50.

Reliablity improves perhaps... but AF speed dun seem to gain much comparing non-SDM lense on the K-7... so its adds to nothing except cost and potential issues in the future...no SDM lenses for mi hee hee

Well, while I like the DA* for it is 400g lighter to carry, didn't care about SDM of HSM , it is still 50mm shorter and 105mm when one add the 1.4x TC for telephoto use. It is not like we can zoom in with our feet for the missing 50mm. If going long is the main consideration for concert hall, sports, wildlife and birding, adding a 1.4x TC will be indispensible to extend the reach for such photography cos 300mm is still short. If one intent to use it mostly from the short end, the Pentax is much more useful then.

DA* 60-250mm F4 with 1.4x TC - 525mm
Sigma 100-300mm F4 with 1.4x TC - 630mm

I feel SDM to me is not so appealing, because heard quite a fews of these potentail problems, FA* lens focus very fast ... if they can make these motors can do aways with SDM, at lease for me.

You worried too much I guess. I lot guys like SDM lenses 'cause they are quiet, focusing is at least as fast if not faster than most screw driven lenses.

SDM is the future, live with it :)

SDM is quite nice addition, but have you noticed that it's only included in premium lenses? unlike in other brands it is SDM by default even kit lenses.

Am confused?!! Which brand are you specifically referring to and which kit lenses to be exact?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this one's quite smooth for my unknowledgeable taste. EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS from canon.

Maybe we both aren't on the same track here!!

But the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS from Canon does not have HSM. Besides, its build quality is decent, but not as good as the Pentax DA 18-55 which also does not have SDM.

I'm assuming we are using the abbreviations SDM and HSM interchangeably... both referring to nearly noiseless supersonic/hypersonic drive in-lens focusing motors.

Maybe you're right and I'm getting knotted up in all the terminology!! :D

Fengwei how is the DC on your DA 18-135?

Heard that its very fast, hope that it proves to be a reliable and fast replacement for SDM.

The DA18-135 is fast and sharp. At least my copy is.
