Shutter Sound is why I shoot Canon.

is the sound coming from 500D a mechanical sound or a sound file? I have a previous lumix which can disabled the sound

Neither, its all in your head.

You have to connect camera via USB and there's a hack program which will search for 'shutter.3gp' soundfile and overwrite it with a null sound...If anything goes wrong, actually it's as going to the Menu and select "Clear All Settings" and it will restore back to factory preset. Took me no more than 10 mins, 8 was looking for the hack... and what do you get after all these? Silent DSLR when snapping!

Actually, I think that's how 450D and 500D sound. Apart from the slight slapping of mirror sound, there's like this squeaky-rubbing-against-dry-rubbers kinda sound.

I prefer 350D shutter sound than 450D/500D. The newer shutter sound sounded pretty filmsy.
I can't deny 7D shutter sound is a w00t.

Phone cameras have the best shutter sounds, some allow you to set your own mp3 clips as shutter sound :-D

some examples include, gunshot.mp3 fart.mp3 scream.mp3.... )

that is why i only use purple light sabres.

its hum has more bass too, just in case you didn't realise.

I dunno how it is supposed to sound like new. This is a 4-5 year old camera liao. LOL!! BTW, Olympus deliberately made a stealth shutter so that it would not be loud. Apparently, this is a feature that they do not think it should be continued because of cost concerns.
