Ic. Once u half press the shutter to focus on the bird, do you follow the bird path or point at an area and waits for the bird to reach it ?
I try to pre-focus on subject along the flight path at approx the same depth as the bird, my left eye is constantly doing this assessment while my right eye tries to place focus point on the bird and follows it, there will be many hits and misses, sometimes i didn't get focus right, sometimes i do but composition is bad. Some preparations below u may wish to try out:
1. Use manual setting, keep aperture around f8 to have more DOF to play with, and set shutter speed to 1/1000s at least.
2. Set ISO to auto if u wish, esp. if light condition is not consistent, in decent light u should get around iso400, if light is too bright, fix iso at 200 and use faster shutter speed.
3. Shoot in the morning or evening when light comes from the sides rather than in the afternoon when light is overhead, stand between light source and subject.
4. Don't chase the birds, choose a good spot and remain there for as long as possible, work with your neck rather than your body, keep movements to the minimum, try to appear like a dead log to the birds.
5. Shoot alone, not in group, keep quiet.
6. Wear something that blend with the surrounding, after a while the birds will be more at ease and fly closer to u.
7. U may be lucky to get a good shot within 10mins, i usually shoot for 2 hours or more.
8. Be patient and keep practise shooting with both eyes open.
hope this helps
