I am also deciding whether to get the 18-200mm. Currently using D70s with default kit lens. Pics often blurred due to handshake. And often cannot zoom enough becoz kit lens only 4x zoom. So should I get Nikon 18-200mm? :embrass:
Alternative i considering Tamron 90mm macro since macro lenses could also be used for zooming...

Well, my Nikon 18-70mm D70 lens is now out of action, as the zoom suddenly decided to be a 24-48mm. Not sure if it's going to be cost effective to repair it or not. I am likely to buy the 18-200VR that I've wanted for a long time. It's also come down in price (a little!). Not sure why so many people here are bashing it; see this review. I also have an inexpensive Vivitar 100mm macro that's pretty sharp, but I have mainly used the 18-70 zoom (20,000+ fairly nice pictures). A few pics taken not too long after I bought the D70 w/18-70 lens. Not changing the lens too often (if at all) is one goal, because once there's dirt on the sensor (unless you have a new-fangled self-cleaning one), it's just a huge pain (OK, sometimes you can blow it off with a small air bulb, but not always). I have several friends with D70s who've had a lot of 'dirt on the sensor' issues, and I've run into it a couple of times as well.

This might help, if you're keen to DIY:

dude... sell ur 17-50 to me !!
i give u my 18-135mm and top up...
then u hav 2 18-135mm...
haha

i hav the same problem also .... was think and think what lens to change...
i am not much of a buying person.. cuz dun hav much to spend anyway..
i think 18-200mm Vr suit mostly everything..

I would think of the following

Get the 17-55 f2.8
Get the 18-200 vr
Keep your 50mm.

17-55 for travel when going to scenic places such as mountanous area, big oceans etc etc.
18-200 when for example going travel to south africa, or goat ranch etc. Sometimes you need the Wide angle, sometimes you need the zoom.
50mm for portraits or specific model shots.

Determine what you're going to shoot that day, put in the lens which fits your desired outcome.

Thanks for the DIY references! Would love to fix my 18-70 lens, if I had a lot of time on my hands (i.e. I'm technically capable of doing it), but am way too busy these days and would rather have someone familiar with it do the work. Years ago, I had a great local guy who used to service my Mamiya-Sekor AutoXTLs (an electromechanical wonder w/nice bayonet lenses, sold these off to pay for the D70 and haven't regretted it at all). The DIY lens fix posting pix look kind of like the time I tried to take apart an iBook G4 to replace the disk drive -- way too many hours -- thanks Apple :(. I'm waiting for new camcorders with the utter simplicity of pop-in 2.5" drives! Meanwhile, I am having fun with my Vivitar 100mm macro-capable lens that I haven't used for a while. P.S. Gave in and ordered the Nikon 18-200VR which should arrive by the weekend. Maybe it will be (slightly) less expensive next month, but I need a general purpose zoom lens to leave on the D70 and the 18-200 seems to come with a much longer term warranty!

I love my 18-200mm. Yes, it isn't a particularly fast lens, but it leaves the Tamron for dead. I have found it to be the ultimate walk around lens and, with a speed light, low light and indoor shooting isn't much of a problem anyway. Not to mention that the VR2 does absolute wonders! I took the photo below with this lens. As far as I can tell I have no complaints over either the sharpness or the bokeh. Beautiful lens!

Amazing that my post last yr is dug up again!

Just for the record, I'm now using a Nikkor 17-55mm instead of the 18-200VR. The 18-200mm is a great walkabout lens but I decided to get the 17-55mm after seeing the superd IQ. Also, I'm doing more events/wedding shooting now so 17-55mm is more suitable for my cause.

wah... thing change when time pass...
hahah..

Went down to SLS AP and was quoted 995 with GST for 18-200. Anybody know a cheaper place to get one locally?

Wow so cheap now! Luckily I sold mine just before the price change...

I like this lens too. Exposure and composition are the keys to good pictures, despite some complain about the IQ delivered by the 18-200mm VR.
