Should Clubsnap restrict new members from B&S

I've noticed the increase in scammer posting in B&S.
I am suggesting that the moderators should restrict newly joined members from posting in B&S.

This is a normal practice in a lot of forum and will deter them from posting in Clubsnap.

2 sides of the coins, maybe we get more consensus...

If you've noticed services wanted section, its moderated, and we normally will not allow threads which are created with dubious members with low post counts and 'funny' requests.

If we're to moderate all B&S threads, its going to be tedious. so perhaps the best would be to script it to prevent newbies from posting, which will be another problem. some will cry foul they can't buy or sell.

Well, I dun think that all newbies are scammers so probably to ban them from the BnS forums is probably too harsh an action to take.

Probably a better way in my opinion would be for forumers to report the scammers that they have encountered on the BnS forum and for the mods to either suspend or deregister them.

maybe should adopt the guidelines of services section, a minimum amount of 50 posts before they can post any WTS thread.

This idea i agree...

Cos i am a newbie too & i sold my camera stuffs thru clubsnap :)

then you'll see more spam everywhere...

like, Nice pic, Upz for u, Nice one bro... etc...

those outright spams will happen in every single section, mostly dealt with instantly.

the B&S section have a script which they have to follow the format. So its confirm not a Bot spam.

In such cases, we do hope you guys report these 'spams' and give us a reason, as we might not know the entire story of the spam if its concealed. Like some reports of members having multiple nicks, buying using 1 nick and selling using another, reaping profits.

We have reviewed some of the possibilities before such as imposing a minimum post count before giving the new members the ability to post in the BnS section, but there will be problems such as getting new members spamming across the other sub-forums just to gain the post count.

The Admin and Moderators teams are looking into all possible solutions. We aim to please all, but some time it is hard to cater for everyone's need.

anyway for now, just search the seller post before dealing with him, if you're unsure.

I think the admin/mods are already doing a very decent job. :)

Whatever happened to personal responsibility and due diligence? If you are a buyer, do your own research and flag any suspicious seller.

We don't need more nanny-state features that replicate what ought to be simple common sense when buying in an online marketplace.

Just because people do not post all the time, does not make them untrustworthy. Give every member the benefit of the doubt, and not let this become something that drives people away. B&S is a service that benefits most photographers in the hobby.

Nope. Firstly, I believe that in the long run people will get very irritated by it as how would you define a newbie? Post counts? Time of Joining? Post counts are not reliable as i can just spam and increase post counts. Time? That would mean that people who are only here to trade will be irritated as they have to wait which will decrease readership and viewership on CS.

It's a personal thing and I believe that it's you, the buyer or seller who has to be careful. If you don't trust the guy with low post counts then reject him. It's personal preference.

well said

i joined becos i wanted to get a camera thru the buy and sell....

but i cant be buying all the time right..so slowly...im flipping thru the pages in the other sub forums unknowingly...right now, buy and sell is more of a daily check for me to keep up with the items and pricing...but flipping thru other forums looking at pictures and discussion is enjoyable for me...

there are 2 sides to everything...:)

Hi all. After reading the views of both moderators and "forumers", I think we should free up the B&S section to allow forumers to do some feedback. This will allow posts that are suspicious to be pointed out by fellow forumers. In this way we don't completely depend on moderators and load them to police the B&S section. But I do recognise that this will invite other problems like unnecessary comments of pricing and items conditions hence irritiating sellers. There are pros and cons of a more "self policing" approach in B&S section or completely restricted posting as it is now. Either way it would require those who participate to be mature and courteous.

The Personal Classifieds (aka Buy&Sell) section are, for the most part, self-policed by members as we truly do not have the time to go through all the threads in there - members have been very helpful in using the Report Post function to inform us of errant threads and we will then take action.

This "action by exception" method has worked well and we do not see (currently) any reason to modify for the time being.

The bigger picture which I think you are referring to is allowing members to post in the threads directly. Our take is that since we implemented the new system, the issues involved in monitoring (like price crashing, irrelevant remarks etc) has been stopped and we believe, overall, the new system works better than the previous "free-for-all open system".
