Shooting with ancient RangeFinder

It has been like 10yrs since I'd taken a single photo with my dad's ancient rangefinder.

Anyway, looking forward to shoot with the rangefinder again. Any tips to shoot besides focusing the images properly?

I'm wondering what are the ASA settings for? Does it mean I have to adjust the ASA according to my film's ISO? What happens if I adjust the ASA higher/lower den the film's rated ISO?

ASA rating is the ISO equivalent now,ur rangefinder exposure meter will calculate the correct exposure based on wad u set on it.

If u are relying on a separate light meter to determine exposure,the ASA setting will be of no use and won't affect anything.

I use mainly rangefinders now, and SLRs, past and future digital purchases are my "backups"!

Rarely shoot in film nowadays due to cost of developing the prints.

Got my RangeFinder repaired, but a little apprehensive abt using it since it had not seen the light of the day for 10yrs till I got into photography recently.

I'm kinda curious, since there isn't any auto-rewind mechanism with older rangefinders, how do u all actually take the film out? By cranking and cranking on the crank till kingdom come?

The last time I tried, it sure took an awfully long time.

Shoot slides? I rarely print my shots. Still an ongoing cost, but that's why I'm still shooting film - for slides, and B&W. I rarely use negs, only at events.

Yep! The last part is always the boring rewinding of the film. Just remember to press the small button below the camera to disengage the.... film transport? (what do you call that) so that you can rewind.

BTW, anyone using Contax G2 here?

Yes, I use Contax T3 as my backup camera.
Yeah lo, although my M6 have a motordrive but too bad it does not have a film-rewind function!

Xpan, Contax G1/G2 are all electronics camera with intergral motor while Leica M is a fully mechnical camera ma!

lol, be thankful your rewind knob isn't something like this on my FED-2! (pic right)

and the film advance knob! (pic left) guaranteed to leave you with a sore thumb at the end of the day! :bsmilie:

I have a fed1. The lack of shutter speeds makes it a little hard to use though. Loading and unloading of film is also like a black art.

I just won an action for a mint condition Yashica 35 GSN, comes with mint condition case and flash too.

actually, a dial rewind knob is quite common. The LTM and M2/M3 all use it, as does the infamous MP. Its good for winter when u're wearing gloves, trust me. Also doesn't break as easily cos the shaft is super thick.. The angled ones from the M4 to the M7 are thinner and i have had friends who are so rough, esp in the cold that they managed to bend it. Not nice.... I use an M2 btw. Still thinking about getting a metered RF.
