why can't? as long you able exposure it correctly, it shouldn't cause any harm to the camera, unless you leave the camera under sunlight for a very long period as well.Haha, kind of a stupid question. using a smaller aperture, you will get a star burst effect.
no expert, but it looks like usage of small aperture and possibly ND filter too.

I am not certain will the sensor or lens will be damaged or not, but I am pretty sure that your eyes will!
for a split second of exposure to the sun should not do any harm to your sensor. looking through the VF at the sun for prolonged period will damage your eyes though.
