Sharing SB-900 usage experience

$637 in SLR Rev 2 days ago.... That the lowest I can get cos I called numerous shop to ask.

any idea what's the price comparison like between SB-700 & SB-900? i've asked SB-900 is like $665? but never ask for SB-700....

size wise the sb700 is definitely smaller than the 900, and for the price the sb700 is 400++ ish...

Anyway just sharing my experience on the SB900 in a few paras:
Basically, the SB900 is a versatile and powerful flashgun. No regrets after sinking 599 on it haha.
However despite all the wonders of this flash, one main disadvantage that i find is the cumbersome size of it (as compared to sb800 and canon's 580ex).
Secondly, i have experienced this small problem, not a big issue though. When shooting in portrait format (vertically) using the grip, sometimes the sb900 will lose connectivity while mounted on the horseshoe. Then i would have to tug or adjust the flash for it to resume connectivity. (doesnt happen all the time but only sometimes). It works flawlessly when used in CLS, wirelessly (either as master or slave) or shot in the traditional landscape format (where the flash is mounted upright).
Googled on this issue and apparently it is due to the sheer weight of the flashgun (with 4 batteries) mounted on the teeny weeny horseshoe mount. Same problem faced by some d700 users i think.
Bottomline, a great flash

Bro maybe you want to consider some pocketwizards? They are now available for Nikon cls.

:sweat::sweat: either way,i'm gonna get 'lecture' from my other half despite telling her it's all for our baby and family portraiture set up. i'm reviewing my options though
i've been looking around the web, and discovered a whole slew of overheating comments on sb900. one of the suggestion to resolve this was to use manual mode instead of auto mode which uses pre-flash to determine the correct exposure. is there a way for the flash to learn the correct settings and save it for the whole event (e.g. have this auto mode a few times and save the setting)?
another suggestion was to buy a sb-9 or some external powerpak if you expect continuous shooting (sports and wedding). as i most probably fall under this category (eg. sports). is it possible to stop the flash, but still continue to shoot while i still don't have the external battery pack.

yup, the video he has on his post actually has more details which i have mentioned in my post above. have you used your sb900 extensively? how many flashes have u taken before it stopped working?

That said, for events I use sb600 mostly. Sb900 comes out when I have special needs, esp as fill light in bright daylight, usually off camera.
