Sharing SB-900 usage experience

Their goods are directly affected by worldwide shortage due to the recent earthquake. Which in fact most major online store are selling at MSRP right now

anyone knows where to get the best price for sb900. cathay and iphoto quoted 640. i wonder why dd electronics quotes higher given that they sell grey sets.

$637 in SLR Rev 2 days ago.... That the lowest I can get cos I called numerous shop to ask.

yes it is THE flash.

But for most purposes a SB700 will suffice.

Although I got both sb-700 & 900, it wasn't an upgrade but a complement. SB-700 is a great flash. Do well in most situation unless you are a demanding strobist who needs repeating flash.

size wise the sb700 is definitely smaller than the 900, and for the price the sb700 is 400++ ish...

Assuming it's gonna be before they up the price:

SB700: $430 ~ $450ish
SB900: $630 ~ $680ish

Decide early, and go shop to shop in Funan and Penisular Plaza to ask for price.

Current pricing thereabouts: sb700 is 440. Sb900 is 640.

Not sure what will happen in the coming days.

Anyway just sharing my experience on the SB900 in a few paras:

Basically, the SB900 is a versatile and powerful flashgun. No regrets after sinking 599 on it haha.

However despite all the wonders of this flash, one main disadvantage that i find is the cumbersome size of it (as compared to sb800 and canon's 580ex).

Secondly, i have experienced this small problem, not a big issue though. When shooting in portrait format (vertically) using the grip, sometimes the sb900 will lose connectivity while mounted on the horseshoe. Then i would have to tug or adjust the flash for it to resume connectivity. (doesnt happen all the time but only sometimes). It works flawlessly when used in CLS, wirelessly (either as master or slave) or shot in the traditional landscape format (where the flash is mounted upright).

Googled on this issue and apparently it is due to the sheer weight of the flashgun (with 4 batteries) mounted on the teeny weeny horseshoe mount. Same problem faced by some d700 users i think.

Bottomline, a great flash :)

:sweat: either way,i'm gonna get 'lecture' from my other half despite telling her it's all for our baby and family portraiture set up. i'm reviewing my options though;)

Men best excuse to get camera gadgets. Haha

i've been looking around the web, and discovered a whole slew of overheating comments on sb900. one of the suggestion to resolve this was to use manual mode instead of auto mode which uses pre-flash to determine the correct exposure. is there a way for the flash to learn the correct settings and save it for the whole event (e.g. have this auto mode a few times and save the setting)?

another suggestion was to buy a sb-9 or some external powerpak if you expect continuous shooting (sports and wedding). as i most probably fall under this category (eg. sports). is it possible to stop the flash, but still continue to shoot while i still don't have the external battery pack.

Culprit is rechargeable batteries. You can read more info here:

With more power comes the issues related to it.

Hope this helps.

yup, the video he has on his post actually has more details which i have mentioned in my post above. have you used your sb900 extensively? how many flashes have u taken before it stopped working?

So far, I have not experienced the issue. I do not fire non stop. I am slow. ;)

That said, for events I use sb600 mostly. Sb900 comes out when I have special needs, esp as fill light in bright daylight, usually off camera.
