Nice shot. Frozen onions. Bouncing onions

After we left Dong Ba market, all of us went to a restaurant which is 5 mins walk from our hotel.

The dinner were accompanied by an imperial court music, named Nhã nhạc (in vietnamese).

Traditional Vietnamese music is highly diverse and syncretistic, combining native and foreign influences. Throughout its history, Vietnam has been heavily impacted by the Chinese musical tradition, as an integral part, along with Korea, Mongolia and Japan. The ancient Indochinese kingdom of Champa also had an historical effect upon this music, because the Vietnamese court found it intriguing. However, even with these foreign influences, Vietnam has a unique musical tradition stemming from its native roots.

Nhã nhạc is the most popular form of imperial court music, specifically referring to the court music played from the Trần Dynasty to the very last Nguyễn Dynasty of Vietnam, being synthesized and most highly developed by the Nguyễn emperors. It is based on earlier Vietnamese imperial court music, its primary influences coming from Ming Dynasty's imperial court and later the music of Champa. Along with nhã nhạc, the imperial court of Vietnam in the 19th century also had many royal dances which still exist to this day. The theme of most of these dances is to wish the kings longevity and the country wealth.

Eat like the King in Hue...

Yupe. The King in Hue is so lucky. Every day he has got shrimps caught from the moat around his fortress for lunch.

The Hue King must have really enjoyed photography and knew his camera well, as apparent from his collection and display of his D3s in his favourite dining hall...

Dong Ba Market Street shooting...

This time round for myself and SereneXMM, we were purely on rangefinder.
We were both pleasantly impressed by the friendliness of the Central Vietnam people.
Usually in a local marketplace like these, tourist like us would have been chased away and scolded at once we lifted up the camera to our eyes.
But surprisingly, here, the people are so happy to see SereneXMM and I shoot them.

It is the first time both of us are interacting with our street subjects in this way. And it was indeed refreshing.
Here are some of my snap captures, some interactive, others sniped from the side.

In a sea of shoes...
This was the scene right upon entering Dong Ba market. I am sure many of my fellow team mates saw this..

.. in awe with the sea of shoes..

I really didn't know how the local Central Vietnam people would react to close range shooting.. But they were a natural!

... where Conical hats and Baguets are aplenty...
We turned one corner and saw, a whole sea of conical hats. Now we understand where they buy theirs from...
.. not to mention a lot mountain-load of Baguet!

... A fashion display of the Cones...
This Dongba market is so flavourful. The old-style feel of the place, with the people... classic.

The Smiles of Hue

The spontaneity of the people impressed us.
The readiness of the people to smile surprised us.

This modern-looking pretty lady was buying something with her friends. She caught sight of me shooting them, and she turned and gave me a mega-watt smile that melted my heart.
Hmmm... maybe it's the magic of the small small toy-like camera...

This young girl was buying conical hats.
We lowered ourselves and smiled at her. She couldn't understand a word of English.
But a smile was all a photographer needs to send the message across: "Can I take a shot of you?"

This store owner was sitting relaxly when a passing-by traveller (me) squat down and took her by surprise.
But the surprise turned into a nice smile.

Now this stall-keeper was even more impressive. I gave her a big smile and took a shot of her. She in-turned broke her what appeared to be po-piah and offered me half of it!
Such hospitality! Simply unbelievable.

Not only are the Vietnamese womenfolks spontaneous in their smiles, the menfolks are just as friendly.

On the Busy Streets of Hue...

Once we stepped out of Dong Ba Market and into the rush of the main thoroughfare, we came face to face with another different aspect of the flavour of Central Vietnam.
The hordes of motorbikes, bicycles, trishaws, vans... all vrooming past us in a total blur.
But in the midst, some serenity remains...

"Don't bother me. It's my smoking break now..."

Lost in his own thoughts...
This trishaw rider was very interesting. He sat there for a long long time looking afar. Lost in his own world.
I literally stood there for close to 5 minutes to wait for him to turn back. And when he did so, I snapped. And yet, he just looked at me with that
blank 'I don't care if you take my photo or not' look.

Trigger-happy with 4 fps on a Rangefinder...

I am a DSLR shooter. And I love the rapidity and continuous shooting capability of the DSLR.
So much so that even on a Rangefinder and on film, my right index finger forgot itself...

Here was a lovely family... by the side of the main road having a chat.
At first, the young son spotted me and gave me the Victory sign.
Then his father and his brother saw me and smiled.
And when they finally moved off, the other ladies also smiled.
Well, now I know. Central Vietnam is also a land of many smiles.

Ooooh lovely Onioin shake, Reservoir88!
Boy, it makes me wonder where I was while you and Melvin were shooting this Onion lady. Nice capture!

While everyone else is processing their photos, do allow me to share more photos taken in Dong Ba Market.

Haha! Processing the photos indeed, Melvin!
You forgot to say hanging and waiting for them to dry before scanning them. LOL..
Another nice angle for thie Onion shaking lady!

What Limwhow say is right because we both went to CV this time to just shoot the people there. And they are really very friendly people. Every time all I need to do is to use my eyes to smile at them and they respond with a smile.
I really like street shooting in CV.

Limwhow say nowadays because he is on rangefinder he doesn't shoot as many shots and as many record shots as he used to.
Here is a few record shots that I shoot.

A street scene.

We all getting ready to cheong dong Ba market. Kekeke...;)

This girl she is very shy. I stand there and gave her a big smile she still wave her hands and didn't want to be photographed. But I still took a shot.

6900221951_c9ffd8e17b_b.jpg

This girl wasn't shy. She happily let me take her shot. Now I look then I see the lanterns behind her. I though only Hoi An got such lanterns. Hue also have!

6900225469_3c7e91fbab_b.jpg

This was the girl that Limwhow and I we both shot. I saw the conical hat with the design and that very nice. I told Limwhow that I want one like that too.

My share of the squatting and sitting sellers. I also long time haven't seen road side sellers like these already. Brings back memories for me.

6900246125_85b115ceb0_b.jpg

These two ladies very cute. They were talking to each other then I smiled and talk to them. They didn't understand what I was saying but they joked among themselves. I like the way the people responded to me.

6900229227_a8d39da229_b.jpg

Here this seller just squatted in the middle of the corner and sold her bread.

6900212353_b6c28cffa5_b.jpg

One leg up...

6900241221_c3b4ae420c_b.jpg

She was very hard-working. She sold at one place, then got up and carried her wares to another place to continue.

6900250795_e5afb54b5d_b.jpg

Don't know what she was selling. We did not want to take the chance to eat on the first day.

Actually there are so many things to shoot and we have a lot of time. So we went out to the main road to shoot panning shots.

6900260917_1d4b8c3d2a_b.jpg

Wa lau, the first time I see trishaw with this big cabinet like this. This man is really good.

It was getting dark already.
