... of Steps, of Stones, of Rocks, of pillars..

Honestly I do not know enough of the layout of Angkor Wat to even begin to comment.
I will leave that to the more experienced historian-cum-scholars.
I only see structures made of rocks and stone and that is enough to excite me to go very low down and press my shutter.

Angkorian Steps
We started here with our two Men-In-Red stepping through the secluded opening
that used to lead into the sanctuary of peace and holiness some 1300 years ago...
on the very same steps that Brahminian priests used to walk on...
Notice how carefully they are walking?
Have to walk side ways in order not to slip...

The steps were typically Cambodian - narrow and high.
Which led us to conclude that the Angkorian's were of a special breed.
Probably long-legged and small-footed.
Deft enough to navigate these steps that are meant to keep out foreigners of a bigger build.

Ang-Moh-rian Steps
So what did the Cambodian authorities do?
Cleverly they constructed scaffolding of steps of international Ang Moh size.
That we can now climb comfortably without fear of missing one step
on the teeny weeny moss-laden rock and come-a-poppity-popping down...

But with trepidation the modern subject still gingerly steps upward...
while her fellow team mates wait below watching her closely with bated breath,
waiting to see if she would tumble backwards if her foot misses...

... and of Tunnels and of Carvings...

Many a hallway bear platforms where statues sat.
vngks remarked: " Hey, do you notice ~ many of these statues have got their heads removed!"
Indeed. Many of the platforms are without statues, and many of the statues are headless.
Maybe looting? Maybe...

And in the central courtyard of the middle temple, a defaced carving stands.

Angkor wat was built by King Suryavarman II in 13th century as a Hindu temple.
Thus all the deities were Hindu gods. It was later that Buddhist influences came into the temple.
Here a Hindu deity was apparent.

Haha.. Stevepow. Hey you have been there, done that already lah yah, no?
Just another series of photos to help refresh your memory of where you have been while you were at angkor Wat lah!

... it's mid morning. And the sky darkens..

"Where is every body?" wondered the four of us.
"Never mind, we just walk towards the west gate. That should get us out." vngks assured.
"I'm not going to climb that high high steps up to the top. That'll kill my knees.." joked LEO.
"I am HUNGRY." screamed SereneXMM.
"Wait first, " vngks, the tripod man. "Let me fix up my tripod and take a shot of these two subjects."

Interesting.
Angkor wat has soooo many chambers and tunnels and corridor-ways.
It's difficult not to get lost in the labyrinth of halls.
We were lucky to find a small arrow pointing westwards.
And descended the steps we did, to find ourselves once again in the open field.

The three of them looked up... and saw...

... Dark clouds threatening...

"Is it going to rain soon?" I asked myself.
"Don't know leh. Never mind. Let's just walk out through the West Gate and look for our bus." replied vngks.
"We still have one and half hours' time."

Canon 20D R72 IR with Tokina 10-17 fisheye.

My shots are all the chap-lunk candid shots.
Don't really have good, conventional landscape nor architectural shots.
For those I leave it to the experts. Mine are record shots for fun.

... Ooooh, the biscuit tastes really nice.

This man is clever. Years of suffering with SgTrekker trips have taught him to always prepare some snacks.
Because with Adrian, we invariably go hungry. That's why Adrian is very frightened of us.
We kinda ate him pok-gai while we were up on Everest trek! LOL...

"I don't care lah," thought I. "You eat first. Meanwhile I shoot my cameras."
No subject, really bo bian. Even the oldies have to be taken out for a model shoot.

... Uh Oh... It looks like it's going to rain. Really.

"Uh-oh, the rain drops are pelting down," remarked LEO. "We'd better get going."

"Wait. Let me have a last IR shot of the front of the west wall first," said vngks the IR man.
Forever the champion, this vngks. I love travelling with this guy.
Cos he never-say-die.
Come hail storm in Everest,
come high altitude in Huanglong,
come rain in Borobudur,
come deep cold in Panajakan Bromo,
come scorching heat in White Desert Egypt,
come turbulent STOL plane flight in Luang Prabang...
He is always the one who keeps going.

One for him and one for her.

Ooooh.... It's raining Cambodian cats and dogs!

My goodness. No sooner did we arrive at the open space outside of the West Gate did the rain crescendo-ed to a max.
We paid for 4 cans of soft drinks at one of the stalls and that 19 year old Cambodian girl very kindly fetched us 4 chairs and provided umbrellas.

8070280714_16f56e6ffa_c.jpg

So here we were, 9:05am Siem Reap time. And one hour more to meeting time.
We were caught by the famous Cambodian rain, with nothing more than our gears, a chair, an umbrella... and bladders full to the brim.

This the place where lawyers yearn to graduate from? The famous Middle Temple?

Divinemoment! Oh... clever man, you are.
Indeed. But unfortunately the four of us never attained the highest level of the middle temple.
The rest of the team who were up there must have obtained the secret of the highest order.
No wonder they have kept mump the whole trip.
Wisen up they were. LOL..

Victory Gate, here we come...

Our guide Mr Thay said: "This is the gate through which the King returns home victorious.."
And on this rainy morning, as the rain peters off, we did the same as the King 800 years ago..
.. but just that instead of chariots, we were on foot.

Adrian: "Erm.. guys, I need you all to be very stealthy, very silent."
"Because we are going on a covert mission... a model shoot."
"If you guys see any movement in the leaves, just take cover."

Wow. First time see him so serious.

Cambodian Model..

"Where is the model?" asked AlexK.
People Portrait King.. buay tahan already... LOL..
8070284848_d55871442a_c.jpg

Erm.. nah, this one here.
Fully equipped with Hadley Pro bag, Walkie talkie, Rolleiflex and an Aunty hat.
And the pre-requisite thick luscious Cambodian lips.
How's that?
8070298225_be1683479b_c.jpg

"Oh no no no no... mo-gao-ngo...!" exclaimed the boys.
"I shoot stones and rocks better," and off he went shooting rocks.. waiting for model to come.
