New power cords for 14.1m Xboxes

THE Xbox is hot - literally. Microsoft is offering a replacement power cord for 14.1 million Xboxes worldwide, after 30 cases of the game console 'melting' were reported in various countries.

Of the 30 reported cases, seven people sustained minor burns to their hands, 'similar to when you touch a hot iron', said Mr Andres Vejarano, regional marketing manager, Microsoft Home and Entertainment Division, Asia.

In other instances, property was damaged.

For Xboxes manufactured before Oct 23, 2003, Microsoft will deliver new power cords to the homes of their owners at no cost.

The old cord is susceptible to melting at the end where it plugs into the console. The new cord is designed to resist damage to the plug tip and shut off power to the Xbox if component failure occurs. New consoles already have these improvements.

To order a replacement, Xbox owners can go to www.xbox.com and click on the Power Cord Replacement for Xbox link, or call Microsoft on 1800-852-3567. Microsoft advised consumers to switch off their Xboxes when not using them.
