Thanks Wai Hoe!
Great series.
Is your 500mm a Canon EF lens?
I am going to Ethiopia in September and was thinking if I bring a 300mm and 1.4x and 2x extender on a 7d will it be enough?
Yes am using the EF500 IS F4 version1
I am not too sure what subjects are available in Ethopia, so cant really give you good advice
generally if you are shooting birds, you will need the reach.
my experience is 300 with 2x on 1.6crop is good for bigger birds. the small ones wont be sufficient unless you can go really close with your vehicle.
for wildlife, your setup is pretty much sufficient
My first trip to Africa, I was using a 300, 70-200 and TCs. I am pretty satisfied with the results.
Anyway not to worry too much about the reach unless you really want to see the hairs of your subjects
Africa has beautiful surroundings, if you cant get near, include the surroundings in your pictures
sometimes it works better than just getting everything big in the frame
you can get those shots in the zoo easily
my 2 cents
