Thanks for the close-up, Wai. The way the front of the lens is constructed leads me to think that the lens is not a constant length lens, but it should have a non-rotating front element though.

why do u think so? i dont think the front will extend like the 24-70, look at this pic and take note of the place where the hood is mounted

http://www.canon.com.au/ftp/ef 24-70mm f2.8l usm.jpg

then look at the pic for 17-40...u will notice the 24-105 is more like the 17-40, 17-40 got internal zoom and internal focus

Looks similar to 16-35mm f/2.6 USM lens (http://www.canon.com.au/images/big_products/ef%2016-35mm%20f2.8l%20usm%20side%20angle.jpg)

The hood looks like it's mounted on the telescopic barrel, much like a Tamron 24-135 SP. The deeper groove just below the hood threading suggests that the lens will be telescopic, imo.

I beg to differ. Luckily it's a 77mm and not other funny sizes. This is to in line with all the existing L zoom or some of the prime lenses, like 16-35, 17-40, 28-70, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400, 28-300, 300 f4, 400 f5.6.
Totally agreed that 77mm is the standard for Canon.

A lot of people would be going ;p
And we'll soon see lots of 28-135 in B&S. Ha ha ha...

I think you are right on Raymond.
I do sense more 28-135 being unloaded recently ....Maybe they got wind of this lens recently?

i also sense that some 28-135 will be offloaded..prices may drop? but for 1.6x users they still need at least a real 24mm for a decent wideangle (24 x 1.6 = 38)

dude the 17-35 and 16-35 are not that bad... but still a step behind the AFS17-35 hehe.

now we have 17-40L vs 16-35L
and
24-105L vs 24-70L

its sure to cause a lot of dilemma decisions lol

The EASIEST option is to QUIT photography.......... hahaha........ just kidding......

Will most prob be heavier than the 24-70. Looks like the lens barrel will move as you zoom, just like the 24-70, but 24mm will be the short length while 105mm will be the longer end...(for prosumer lenses, the white dot beside the focal length mark means that the lens will be shortest at that focal length...)

Does this mean that the lens will stick out of the lens hood when at maximum zoom? (If the lens hood is the same as the 24-70mm)

it will stick out, w/o doubt.:)

dunnoe if it helps... but from the specs page of the now removed link... the size of the lens was reflected.. it only states 1 length. So unless there's some info not updated or wrong I presume that this lens does not extend. Do correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it extends.

It makes no sense to include a gap between the words & the hood clip.

From the pic, it seems that the hood will attach to the front tip of the lens, and will thus extend together with the lens as it zooms in/out.

The closest I can think of is like it's non-L cousin, the 28-135 IS (pic below)
http://www.canon.com.au/ftp/ef 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 is usm.jpg

So if this is the case, most likely the hood will be a flower shaped one as well.

Before it was taken off, the website had also the specs sheet for the 24-105mm f4L IS, and it was stated at 670g, which is lighter than the 24-70 f2.8L (~950g). I think it was discussed on the 1st page that this lens is lighter than the 24-70. See this link: http://forums.clubsnap.org/showpost.php?p=1481055&postcount=17

Dun think they would design a lens which sticks out from the lens hood at max zoom if its non IF. It would look plain weird.

I suspected they will come out with a F4 standard zoom lense (remember my poll???), but I never thought they will go for a 24-105mm.....

I thought 28mm is ideal as this will not eat into the 24-70mm market, as that 24mm will be a big difference to some for those 4mm.........

But it is yet to be official right????? :dunno:

Anyone know when is the lens available in S'pore and how much is the lens ?

Err... not so ... the Canon Australia website has it since a few days ago.
Based on that, we think SGD 1,600 +/- 5 or 10%.

The 5D is still unofficial
