Bus is also luxury transport. In many parts of Africa and India, many people walks tens of km from point A to B. The p@P gahment should support the PTC to increase transport fares so that the can paid high salaries to their talented ministars.

yup.. quite sure taxi companies will start to increase fares once the approval is given for the increased bus and train fares.

cos they will always say.. taxis are luxury products.. they have to be priced much higher
than that of buses and trains.

erh..... i don't think only taxi companies will start to increase fares ..... a lot of other will also increase price... this is for sure....

Is there to invest in SMRT and SBS? Do they offer shares? I thought SBS did, cant remember...
With all these hikes, you will be ensured of good returns!

He assumes a lot when making arguments. Anyway, he has already stated in another thread that he is a government plant.

Cor, you're disappointing. Really thought you had a little more about you than stooping to that.

Nice, selective quoting and selective rebuttals - I'll assume that points not rebutted are admitted.

Now on to those you have selectively rebutted:

What previous posts? Your first post in this thread is #105 and from then on, I don't see any "have done so"s at all.

Folks may not only write for their own self interests, they may be writing from the perspective of everyone, that includes the poor, the rich, as well as their ownselves. Unlike you who only think about yourself when writing - ie if I got money, I shouldn't complain because I am not affected. My point was to show that anyone can write, and views are not confined only to one's self interests. FYI, I seldom take the bus, yet I still write about such things that affect everyone.

We are not talking about a subsidy across the board, we are wondering why profits need to keep increasing. When there is a profit, that means there is no subsidy.

Again, I ask, why can't a billionaire who has money to spend on cameras and everything, gripe about an obviously unfair position or profiteering, by a company, whose services he doesn't intend to use?

This topic comes up every time there is a fare hike. I've done a comparison on a previous thread, many many months ago. Do some diligence if you will.

As for selectiveness, you have yet to show ANYTHING concrete to support your contention about the lack of affordability of fares.

Lastly, I only debate your points, I don't stoop to insinuate anybody's origin. If you can't do the same, then I can only say you are even lower than the establishment you so detest.

price increase, temp in Kopitiam oso increase. betta switch on aircon liao... :bsmilie:

but aircons in most single-decked buses does not feel any cooler. oni double-decked 1s can feel diff in temp woh...

is mine worth 2-cents of complaint? ;p

not too sure if anyone encoutered "bunch-up" service before...

i used to take service 268 (feeder service) to work. at certain timings in the morning, if you miss one bus, you would have to wait like 15 mins for the next one. and what do you know? when they come, they come in numbers. not two... not three but four at one go... and all this during morning rush hour.

this really pisses me off. wanna increase fare... improve bus service.

:o:
didnt know that !

Tot they said fare increase last time was to improve level of service as well as to deal with the oil prices fluctuations ???

As what you said, it's fluctuations, so when oil prices goes down, did they lower the fares? It's just an excuse IMO.

Here are some of my views from a purely business point of view.

Well, sometimes these companies set their prices AFTER they set their profits.

These companies have to make a profit, otherwise no one will be doing this business. Will you be in a loss making company? Every company must make profit. Companies exist to make profits, and is their only sole reason for existence.

The sole reason they are in the lime light is because their decision to raise prices affects people with no options. The only other option is walking. With that, in theory, I'll have no problems if taxi fares even reach $100 for starting fares simply because it's not compulsory to take taxis.

The more appropriate question would be whether the price set is worth the value of the ride. Sad thing is, even if it's not worth the price set, there's not a lot of alternatives commuters can choose from.

Not another hike! sigh...

These hikes will definitely drive up our blood pressures. Then hospital will have better biz.

.

if hospital biz good, doctors will not be enough...

then they increase the number of doctors in hospitals...

who do u think will bear the cost? :bsmilie:

welcome to singapore... where everything goes up except our salary..:bsmilie:

This is the way of the P@ppies ... profits every year must always increase by decreasing costs and increasing revenue. Think about it .. how else would our talented ministars be paid their extraordinary salaries. Do you expect Old Lee to give out from his pockets?

Here we go again....

This fare raising exercise arises more like habits than needs.

SBS Transit___________Year 2005_________Year 2006
Profit before Tax.............63.3 mil................ 67.3 mil
Profit After Tax...............51.1 mil................ 56.1 mil

SMRT________________Year 2005_________Year 2006
Profit before Tax.............83.9 mil................ 124.1 mil
Profit After Tax..............126.6 mil.................103.6 mil

As public transport providers, do they really need this another round of fare increase to survive, or to add value to shareholders ?

which year are you talking about that oil prices went down?

erh..... i don't think only taxi companies will start to increase fares ..... a lot of other will also increase price... this is for sure....
Exactly! Whoever increased pricing once will go for 2nd and 3rd and never ending!

Dear Datan:

We will try to work out some figures for you.

Can you please provide us the electricity charges (High Tension Cable) for year 1980.

SMRT owns two lines: North-South and East-West
The total traveling time for one way is 60min for each line.
The average waiting time is 5 min. Therefore, there should be 48 trains on the track at anytime.
Each train operates for 18hrs (6am-12mid night). Therefore, total train hour is 864 hrs per day.
An electrical train with 4000 horse power can provide traction up to a speed of 65 mph.
We assume full power for acceleration and the duration is 10% of the 864hrs = 87 hrs at 4000 hp
We assume 1400 hp to maintain the cruising speed. 777hrs at 1400 hp.
Total hp = (87 x 4000) + (777 x 1400) = 1,435,800 hp = 1,071,106 kw per day

You give the electrical charges and we see how it compares between the 80’s and now.

:D as long Taxi stay same. i happy le = )

as a provider of public service there should b a cap on their profits!

on bo?! :bsmilie:
