Ugh, is that true? That's a major turn off man.
ya, so that might be a deal breaker. hope nissin can come up with a new firmware that can turn off the af assist light.

u can turn it off in the manual mode (IIRC - sold mine so cant remember liao).

Please read the soft copy of the manual in the enclosed CD.

If the af light can be turned off, can get more candid and natural shots of people who would otherwise pose delibrately if they detect the af light. So it would be good if there is an option to turn it off.

Has anybody considered the weight?
I bought the sb900 on monday.
Had an indoor shoot on tuesday.
Childcare Racial harmony event.
580 shots in 2 hours.
1 set of Ever----y alkaline batteries.
Mounted on D90 with kit lens.
No tripod.
Perhaps it's just me but this combi left me with
Quite a sore right forearm.

Anybody has similar experience?

weight-wise di866 is a bit lighter than sb900. the weight distribution is also different. sb900 has one row of batteries which is located futher away from the camera body. di866 has the batteries nearer the camera body, so it should be less tiring when holding in portrait position, have not really tried out in real condition for the di866 though.

sb900's big zoom head is top heavy. many vertical shots will give arm pain. one way is to use wriststrap with vertical grip so palm has more surface to handle the weight.

same same with big heavy zoom lenses on d90.

di866 is indeed compact but weight savings not much. pain comes cos by habit left hand frequently tweak flash settings, leaving right hand to handle the weight

alternate hand to tweak settings help.

some images with nissin di866. sub flash at 1/8 power.

It can be turned off......just gaffer it ........

....thought the AF assist light is separate and not together with the TTL/CLS module encased in the red covered panel?

Well u have to get used to the weight and subsequent body aches.

I use a D300, 2 camera batteries, battery grip, SB-900 flash with external power pack strapped to the waist and a nikkor 17-55mm lens.

The above is my standard setup (exclud backup D90 + lens) for full AD wedding or event. :)

I tried covering up the red panel, the cls doesn't work. So i think it is inside the red panel.

Now that it's been out for some time... how big is the flash compared to a SB800?

Candid shots using flash? I'm not sure how candid your subjects will be after you blast them with light... Haha.
