as for most trips, i will try to diversify the themes. waterfall is planned and we
ended up with two locations - one at skradinski buk in krka national park (pronouced
ker-ka softly) and the other at kravice near mostar. the 2nd one turn out better
due to the high ground available (or either you go near, impossible most of the
time, though two of our garangs went into the water to inch forward a few
metres more and cut the crowds out, i'm very curious about their results,
haven't seen yet).

i think most waterfall, being able to find the vantage, is of uptmost importance.
secondly is to be equipped with necessary focal lengths (mine is limited as
my lens are missing in certain focal lengths). and lastly having good quality
ND filters... we ended up having to share and combine stacked filters (think
is 2 x ND4 or ND8...) and only the most diligents of the group manage to catch
their silky waterfall. i gave up right at the start and rot with a few others (the
boring east asians?) while the adrenaline junkies (mostly caucasian backpackers)
enjoyed the waterfall and all the jumps everywhere. my last few mins salvages
a postable picture as i leave the place and saw a composition that is decent.

technically, it is difficult to get good results from waterfall itself. in this location,
we have backlighting and the waterfall is rather dark. i would wonder if a
frontlighting that is harsh is probably just as difficult. in this pic, there is also a
large mist that fills most of the bottom part of the waterfall which makes it look
washout (or atmospheric??). there is also a portion i blow the highlights just
above greeneries above the waterfall...

well, any waterfall guru can share their experience here?

depends on what hit rate means. i typically shoot between 2-4k pics (checked from windows explorer) in 1-2 weeks of semi/dedicated photography.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer me. I would love to join u on one of these trips but my life has reached a point where backpacking or even a 3days+ leave is quite impossible. :(.....

So, I'll just seat behind my screen & oggle @ pics from u guys.

Travel while u can! Btw, what is the strange sign u have in the watermark?

Oh, I agree with u on the LCD part. Even my D700 is not trustworthy. It always shows overexposed or yellowed of otherwise fine pics that I deleted & only realised that after I've downloaded them. Got to trust the histogram.

at korcula, believed to be the birth place of marco polo. quite a beautiful
though small place to walk around.

this is taken from the west facing coast (of the north-protruding peninsula)
facing the peljeski channel. the girl in the picture is from france. we chat briefly
with the mother/auntie, when the father is busy (didn't seem to notice our
presence?) shooting with his nikon on his front and carrying the baby sling
(something that looks like a pram or seat for the baby) on his back.

i turned the strong pink flowers in the foreground a little more violet/blu, but it
turn back pale pink again on the browser... it could also have been better taken
at a slightly higher vantage which is either if i'm much taller or climbing up to
shoot (not very safe, i would say...)

Nice, something I would come across in books. Too bad about the cars though, but I am nit-picking.

I actually followed your thread asking for companions for a while, until it was confirmed I cannot take that long a leave in Q2.

kind of a dilemna too. such places will require about 10 days or more due to the long flights... my trips generally target at 10 working days over 2 weeks. am thinking of nicaragua next dec, but kind of worried about the hot weather and still haven't got lobang for affordable tickets (1.1k cheapest to LA + 400-600US to managua)

superb pics.. how I wish I could just travel like you, unfortunately, work has its priority.. pui!

saw a spooky lobby of a residential at skradin and decided to shoot something different. added "extra" to the shadow, use your imagination. but oops, think the lower end of the bike will be better included. standing back and covering more would also allow correction of distortion without cropping the arch. nonetheless there will require vigilance and discipline in composition which i like most people wasn't really good at it, and maybe it is difficult to visualise in the dark - an excuse?

luckily got D90 which can work better in low light than D50. ISO limit set at 3200 and hit the limit at 1/8sec at 10mm. D50 start to spoil pics at ISO 800 onwards (and frankly speaking, i used to think canon when i have to use D50 at low light).

still think not spooky enough... any advices will be appreciated.

Hi Zoosh. Excellent pics as usual! For this shot...if you wanted it to be spookier, shld have waited till the girl goes up the stairs and she's blocked by the wall, showing just a bit of her leg. Her shadow would then have cast behind her onto the opp wall, making it spookier.

i think it's quite spookly..just look @ the shadow's arms...

OMG!!! The shadow is holding a gun! Didn't a massacre happened in that house during the Bosnia war? No wonder that girl seems possessed after this shot. She keeps pointing her camera towards her own head...lol.

Zooosh, nice series! I am shouting for more. I think #3 is spectacular! How did you do this? Is there any technique to make the Sun's ray appear as lines?

i thought the rest are all trying it out? basically to part the sun at the edge of something straight, e.g. edge of building, leave a little of the bright source in view and angle till the rays start to appear. i did the filter helps too both in exposure and creating flares.

tram at main bus station of sarajevo. quite a distance from the turkish quarters
of bascarsija. start to shoot a lot more on the darker side i realise. maybe
hiding in accom during daytime or else keep failing under the harsh light...
this one is taken when we rush that evening to get our ticket for next day...
have to take a tram for about 10-15mins from bascarsija to the main bus
station. so travellers, always remember to buy your leaving ticket on arrival if
you intend to secure the ticket, if not have to wait for chance for the limited
bus schedule. this is for the busy summer of jun-aug where more tourists goes
to the place.

you mean by the bright part of the window? then she will be silhouette. details might be lost. i may prefer her to face the wall at the corner...

edit: ok, i understand just the leg... maybe need to be sharper and see the details.... like high heel shoes etc... then can see the effect...

I got quite a different effect but nowhere as spectacular as what you have captured. I am going to get the GND...

a few boys at skradin old town. a few factors makes street portraits
slightly more fruitful. comfortable weather, local traffic, fewer tourists.
we tried to go cavtat which is "supposedly" more residential than dubrovnik,
but turn out a dead place with small beaches, resorts and bungalows (i
feel like i'm walking in a singapore private estate) - no street shooting
opportunities... hahaha.... but skradin old town turn out a nice surprise
although it is only planned as a resting point for the waterfalls at skradinski
buk.

it is quite pleasant to walk around. i was shooting a white cat, before the
boy in the middle started to join in and then his good friends. their reds and
the rosy cheek of the big brother on the right are fabulous, but my color
management of the D90 NEF is a little deficient here. the white cat run away
when they are busy posing for the photo, if not he/she will be good to fill in
that gap where he/she was.

Hi Zoossh

I'm truly envious....the places you've visited... and of 'cos your beautiful photos!!

Colours seem ok leh. Nice portrait. The curly hair & oof face seems to lend an air of mystery.

I also like the colours of #1 and the differential focusing effect... making the girl extra "sweet".

This is as good if not better than the photo of Newyork city in today's Straits Times..  I think your pic is better....

So picturesque! I like the effect of the light/shadows and the red tops.
Are those birds in the sky? They look rather huge.

i initially think is a girl becos he didn't make a noise, though he was rather naughty pulling the tail of a cat. a mate then tell me he's a boy.

eh... i have to see that to know, but i guess you are flattering me. but i would hereby like to highlight two superb urbanscape shot utilising the sun.

one is from jiven from her melbourne shot.
(i didn't ask for her permission first becos i know she's a generous easy going person who wouldn't mind).
