My monopod is built solid and has some nasty edges so I usually bring it with me when shooting night shots in a suspicious neighborhood. Also, before looking into the viewfinder I make it a point to look around for suspicious characters, things, etc. Then when a long exposure is being made I step back and look around, sort of like I am guarding my tripod-mounted gear. This way I figure I'll spot a mugger long before he gets close to to me, and I can make a decision to fight like a baseball player or run like hell. There've been some occasions where I might have discouraged would-be muggers (one of them was near Madrid's notorious Puerta del Sol area) just by staring back at them and holding the monopod ready. But of course we'll never know for sure....

oh and don't forget, bring a ibook with you. Triple laminated plastic, same material they use for bullet proof windows, and you have 2 layers of it, front and back. Also, keep a leica or a nikon F in your pockets. Both are proven cameras to deflect bullets. Honestly, i use a gitzo steel monopod with the markins ball head. Its heavy enough cos i've had to fight off wild dogs before. Knocked one out cold with it. The rest just scattered. But any camera will do really. A camera is built of seriously stern stuff these days. Mostly magnesium core.
