Hi guys, I am a new owner of this camera. As my previous camera is the Canon A75, I was quite overwhelmed by S6500fd's size and features. :P

Anybody here considered getting the extended warranty for $70?

Shot this in RAW then processed using Adobe Lightroom1.2.

I'm newbie.

Whats the general stuff you guys do for processing RAW images?

Adjusting the White Balance, Exposure and sometimes contrast and brightness.

I would shoot RAW if shooting jpeg (regardless of WB mode) is unable to get the white balance I want and/or inconsitent light colour condition (causing different WB rendered if auto WB is used).

Yes, this camera is as big as the smaller DSLRs in the market.

With a long zoom and good high ISO performance (due partly to the larger image sensor), the size of the camera has to be big because of a much bigger lens than compact cameras.

No. I may be selling it off within 1 year and get the newer model which I think should be coming out within that period.

I used to be very particular with my previous camera about using which ISO to shoot, considering whether I want to use tripod and shutter speed vs motion blur + focal length (if handheld) and noise level.

This camera makes me lazy and sometimes not thinking harder.

Below is a handheld shot at ISO 400 but I should have used ISO 200 or even ISO 100 (quite risky) for handheld, considering the focal length (10.8mm= 48mm field of view on 35mm format) and the shutter speed (1/42 at ISO 400) attainable. At this focal length, I could easily handhold it at 1/21 with ISO 200. In addition, I was too lazy to use my handy tripod which would enable me to shoot at ISO 100 (less details lost) with 1/10 and/or use a smaller aperture (for more DOF) with a shutter speed <1/5.

Now I still lack the enthusiasm and seriousness with photography to get into a DSLR system.

1 year ago, I seriously considered getting a DSLR and did a lot of reading and research. In the end, I was put off by the required time, hassle and money (between $5K-$10K) to maintain a DSLR system (body, lenses, accessories etc.) which is to my wants.

To me photograhy is secondary to being there enjoying the occassion. That's why I mostly shoot events and seldom do random walk-about shooting nor model portraits.

I suspect I would probably end up getting a DSLR only when a full frame body is less than $2K and that would be another few years down the road.

To me S6500fd more than does the job. The thought of lugging around a huge bag with strobe & 2-3 lenses just to get the complete focal length range puts me off. This all in 1 realli does the job in all occassions. I bought a cheap wide adaptor lens and this give me ~24mm or so. More than enuff for me ;)

how does this camera fair in drizzles etc... btw i got my camera!

Seems like there's plenty joining the 6500fd user group even after its so long since its release.

Hi there,

Since a lot of S6500fd users here...
I might need your helps for me to decide whether S9600 or S6500fd...
What do you think?

Go to the shops, pick up the camera, feel it play with it, compare and decide . . .:)
That was what I did and chose the S6500 over the S9600 as I felt no need for the hot-shoe and the swivel LCD and pay $200 for some features I will never use.

In fact there are some features in the S6500 I have not used also
