I've got mine for almost two weeks now, so I'm still really "green" in photography :D
So far:
Clock Tower - 1
Clock Tower - 2
Storm(HDR) - 1
Storm(HDR) - 2
All taken in my home town of Piran, Slovenia.

Quite well done.

I suppose you've been taking pictures with other cameras before getting this S6500fd since you know HDR process.

(p.s. kind of strange to have in this forum someone from as far as Slovenia. Usually, most people go to US photo forums such as Dpreview).

I've posted some fireworks pictures just taken last night with my S6500fd :

This is my first time shooting fireworks.

Still learning. C&C welcome :)

The fireworks are very well captured. Doesn't look like first time at all.

Athough the horizon is a little slanted, it can be easily corrected by rotate and crop in photoshop.

Too bad that there are too much smokes covering the background (buildings). As for the smokes in the sky, you can try using the burn tool in photoshop (midtones, 5-15%, brush size depends) to go over them and the smoke will slowly turn darker and if go over enough times, turn blackish. You many also use the burn tool to go over the smokes in the fireworks too but it has to be light handed to avoid darkening the fireworks trails (usually, it's ok because the fireworks mostly belong to the highlights and are left mostly untouched with the burn tool set for midtones). The problematic part is the smokes over the background buildings. If you use the burn tool to go over the smokes on them, the midtones of the buldings will also get dark.

I like this shot

Thanks!

For the shot above, it was the first few pictures I post-processed and I forgot to use lens correction in photoshop to correct the distortion of the buildings. So the buildings on the left are still tilting inwards towards the centre of the frame.

thanks. had a few frens with me that day and they gave me some tips on how to capture the fireworks. Will try ur tips about removing the smoke. not really an expert in photoshop. :)

Hi there.. New member here.. :)

Last night i went to see a fireworks show and tried shooting at 'em for the first time.
I notice that for long exposures the resulting shots tend to have more artifacts/noise..
Any tips on how to reduce these noise? Bigger or smaller AP? Longer or shorter shutter speed?

Thanks for any info..

Welcome.

BTW, did you do any post-processing to the pictures above?

I'm asking because they look more glossy and nicer than what I usually get straight out of my S6500fd. Reminds me of the glossy pictures which came out from my previous Nikon camera.

Welcome.

There are indeed some tiny dust-like noise particles in the first 2 pictures but not in the last 2 pictures.

I also experience the same noise problem with long exposure and this is normal because, apparently, those dust-like noise are the remnants of noise left behind by the in-camera noise reduction algorithm. The amount of noise is proportional to the shutter speed and ISO : the longer shutter speed and/or higher ISO, the more noise particles. This is quite understandable, considering how noise is produced. Long shutter speed produces hot pixels caused by thermal (high temperature) issues in the photosite while high ISO electrically boost the sensitivity of the photosite, causing electrical noise.

I remove such long-exposure noise by carefully selecting those plain areas (where such noise is more apparent) with the lasso tool in photoshop CS2, then use filter/noise/dust and scratches ==> radius 1 or 2 pixels to remove them. Sometimes I apply the filter twice, first time with 1 pixel and the 2nd time with 1 or 2 pixels radius. This filter is applied to the original size picure before any resizing down.

If depth of field is not a problem, then it's better to use a larger aperture in order to get a faster shutter speed and/or lower ISO so that less noise is present.

Without any information of where the fireworks would be fired from , I just stationed somewhere just before the scheduled time and tried to catch them. So a large part of the fireworks was blocked by the foreground. However, at least better than nothing. :)

hey all, i've been looking hi and low, somehow i cant seem to find the s6500fd anymore. anyone knows roughly the price and where at it selling and has stock? :(

and on another side track, i went to bishan and theres this guy selling a S5700 zoom bundled with 2 memory cards, 1Gb and another 2Gb card, Tripod (1.4m) , Original Case, Cleaning Kit, all for 417Bucks. Is this a good deal ?

However i asked him about it, he said it was just a really basic camera and didnt have image qualities like the canon S5. Anyone can clarify? i was abit confused by what he said.

try cathay at marina, 1 week back it was still there, qouting around $600+++ if i am not mistaken with one bag and 1 GB card.

i believe that the 6500FD is superior for a few reasons. the super CCd and the zoom ring that the s5700 does not have, it is also heftier and better to hold in my opinion.

the s5700 is good value i think, the new s5800 has also come out, do check it out.;p
