Other then the moon velasco would need to have a lack of a heart beat to shoot handheld.

correct ! :D Long exposures shots needs tripod support.

yup just browse thru' think will spend more time there

still thinking how he shoot the moon....

handheld, manual mode :D zoom till max.

Quite easy actually. Here is one of mine.

This was with a tele converter, effective focal length of 660mm. Do not forget, the moon is reflecting sunlight. Set focus to infinity, spot meter on the moon. You might want to adjust your white balance, so you do not end up with a yellow tinge.

i love the orangey tinge sometimes :D eh bro how to set focus to infinity? ive never done using that method, will it give crisper shots? i dont use teleconverter tho

I sometimes have difficulty getting focus lock on the moon. So set to manual focus, and push the slider all the way to infinity. Some people advise to move it down a notch after getting it to infinity, I have not really seen much of a difference if I do this.

did a decent portrait shot :D

we need to create a new S5 IS thread :(
anyone here is using the raynox DC250 macro thingy?
does it help macrography tremendously?

do you guys use flash for macro shots as of now?

My avatar was taken with the Raynox DCR-250.

This is the original shot:

Spider in Petri

Sorry for the large size.

This little chap is a baby jumping spider, really small.

I need the flash, as I normally shoot at f4.0. I have a flash diffuser. It is made of fabric, and it collapses down to a small size. The construction is similar to the anti-heat thingys people use in cars. It has a hole in one end, with a bit of elastic around it, mounts around my adapter.

The DCR-250 is not an easy toy to use. I will zoom my lens all the way out, and set focus to infinity. You then move your camera away/towards the subject to get it into focus. The magnification you can achieve is fantastic though.

Here is another example.

This was in some flower. You can see that the DOF is really thin. Getting a shot with the eyes in focus is not easy. I ended up getting a macro focusing rail for really tiny insects, it does help me get a larger number of shots with the eyes in focus.

i love those. you should have flickr or something so i can see all your gorgeous shots and learn from them. You mentioned zoom you lens all the way out meaning zoom till max? wouldnt there be alot of noise? we dont need external flash do we? i hate using flash. 95% of my works dont use flash as i find the flash compensation and all tricky.

i assume you only use manual focus.is it actually better?

tat spidey is awesome...

Thanks! :embrass:

I do have a flickr account. I take alot more photos then I post. I get more joy in shooting them then putting them online. Have only about 150+ photos online.

Forgot to add, I shot those with a S2IS, and the camera is NOT in macro mode.

A little information on what the DCR-250 does.

It can be considered a close up filter. Most of these filters are made up of one or two pieces of glass. The DCR-250 is made up of three glass elements. I think this is one reason why images are still so clear with this lens. What it does is to reduce the minimum focus distance of the lens it is attached to. If you zoom all the way to 420 mm, your minimum focus distance is about one and a half meters. With the DCR-250 attached, it becomes about 12 cm (I was just measuring this when the clip on the DCR-250 snapped.... now I need a replacement holder. Managed to catch the lens as it went flying.).

Nope, do not really suffer from noise. I tend to shoot at the lowest ISO. You need to zoom out to the max for maximum magnification.

I need the flash in these situations, there really is too little light, unless there is really strong sunlight. If you look at the macro forum, most people there shoot with flash. Some people even have two external flashes for their 'point and shoots'. I tend to set the flash to the middle setting, in aperture priority mode set to f4.0. I set focus to infinity as that gives the highest magnification. Getting accurate focus is not easy though, the learning curve is steep.

what would you guys use for manual shooting mode? F=?, iso=?

what else to take note?

This really depends on the situation. Just like if you ask me what utensils do I use to dine with....it really depends, sometimes its chopsticks, sometimes it is fork and spoon....you get the idea? But for rule of thumb, try to use f4 for this camera and use the lowest ISO number whenever possible. Hope this helps.:)

Some more from me.

This series was taken at Pura Luhur Uluwatu.

Bali- Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Surf I
The temple is right on a high cliff that over looks the ocean. It is located at the South-Western tip of Bali.

Bali- Pura Luhur Uluwatu, Monkey
These critters were everywhere. You have to be really careful, they try to snatch anything loose, like cameras, handbags, spectacles etc. etc. I had my spectacles snatched by one of them. Later, another one tried to grab my camera. It was attached to my tripod, so it did not get it.

raymond & cerebrus, both great shots there !

hey guys anyone using flash diffusers for macro shots?
i am in dire need of one hehe.

raymond, did you fire flash there for the macro shot?

Thanks velasco. Nope, no flash.

One more, with S5IS and +2 close-up filter

hi could anyone tell me can i bring my s5is camera to snow mountain to capture pic on winter and what percaution i need to do?
tks

U can. But you better keep the camera in a air tight bag (like zip lock) when the camera has to transit into a place with huge temperature diff (like from warm indoor to cold outdoor). For example if you have been staying in door with heater, then if you want to go out to the snowing outdoor, you better keep the cam in the zip lock bag with some air inside and once you are outside, keep it in the bag for a while and let the temperature settle down before opening up to shoot. If not, the internal of the cam may have condensate and cause some problem.

Its a best practice way, you can take the risk actually if the humility is low....:)

oh well, im thinking of buying a diffuser or should i just make do with some DIY stuffs?

There's one selling at 12 bucks but looks so unglam.

Anyone got recommendation, I really need it for macro shooting. hehe

Its the other way round. > Cold to Warm > then you need to take note of condensation.
