But How Much UV Can a Digital Camera Really See?

UV sensitivity seems to vary from one digital camera to the next, but most digital cameras seem to be substantially less UV-sensitive than film. In fact, few digital cameras are UV-sensitive enough to reap a noticeable optical benefit from UV filtration, even in the most extreme UV conditions—at very high altitude (well over 10,000 feet) or in very long shots over water. A good quality multicoated neutral UV filter is as good a choice as any for a lens protector if you feel compelled to use one, but don't expect to see much of a benefit in your digital images.

Anyway, it is not too important lah. BTW, if you permanently put the UV filter on with the adapter, you camera become longer huh? Actually I have the UV filter, which Felixcat8888 gave to me free when I bought his adapter.:)

I used the UV filter on the adapter permanently fixed there. More of a protection for the lens than for UV shots. That is why the UV filter costs only $10/- ;)

Having bought the Lensmate Adapters, I now have 2 more filters attached permanently on too. More for protection than anything else. :D

Oic. Thanks. But the cam becomes very big if I permanently fixed the adapter on......there is not filter that can go straight to the S3 lens huh?

Hey, I tried the moon with Tv mode. Cannot focus the moon sharply......when in MF mode, the moon is too bright (All white no detail at all) to preview for MF. Then when I snap, I can see the detail, but not sharp (anyway I did not use tripod, at someone's home lah).

Any advise?

I am using 1/125 and f5.6.

Below is the shot without any merging. Abit of USM and contrast..

Moon was easy to take cos it is just a reflection of the sun.

Use manual mode and adjust the exposure. should underexpose the moon. Should not be that difficult..

What setting you use?

I normally set the focus to infinity. Then shoot at about around 1/250 at f4.0. The moon is reflecting sunlight, so exposure need not be that long.

Hey cerubrus and wishxtreme,

See the pic below, focus prob...I lost the data when I crop and save (any way to crop and keep the data?). But should be 1/165 f3.2, was using Tv mode, so shutter auto selected...

How do you crop? I crop in Photoshop, using the crop tool, EXIF data is retained. Also, change your white balance.

No EXIF for this as its a HDR merge via PS

Alot of people get this kind of pic.. which is too yellow.. you need to adjust your WB to get the white colour...

make sure you only use optical zoom to 12x .. no digital zoom should be use... do not worry that the moon look small on your LCD.. when you open the file in PC, with 5mp, it will show up quite big...

Keep trying and improve on it...

I crop with the MS Picture Editor....will use PS next time...Thanks

Hi wishxtreme,

I purposely take the orange tone which was what the moon was that night. I had a few others in greay tone too.

I used 12x, but not in manual mode...I was stuck when I cannot focus and see on the LCD during preview...now I will try with manual mode and focus to infinity. Thanks.
