士林市场!! That's where I tasted my 1st 臭豆腐 12 years back!! Nice pic....miss that palce.:)

Edited P.S.-there are 2 types of 臭豆腐 in taiwan, the fried and the boiled type.....I dare not try the boiled type. Ha!

Just got back from Taiwan, how is this few shots? All are handheld using S3 and P mode most of the time.

The place is pack with people that saturday night.. see the crowd at 士林市场.
Didn't know Taiwanese like 臭豆腐, every night market seems to have it now. Taste not bad but don't like the smell.

But playing with Aperture doesn't help in focusing near obj, like using Macro mode leh....may be he wasn't so near (like he was more than 0.5m away).

iirc, S3 can focus as close as 0.5m in normal mode, then 0.1-0.5 in Macro and 0-0.1m in Super Macro mode.

oh so u were playing with appature lah...! =D

Hey littlejt, I like this pic very much! Very nice lighting, colur and contrast. Any chance of having another pic with the cow looking at the cam? If only the sky has better clouds....:)

BTW, any PP done?

One thing good about S3, you can bring up above your head to shot some of those shot like first pic.

Hi, i think your picts are nice. i always wanted to take the night market style shots... can you share your settings like any external flash used, diffuser, aperture, mode, metering and other info? thanks like the correct exposure of ur picts.

Hi 2 questions:

1. What do you mean by up the blacks??
2. What do you mean by optimising the aperture? If you mean the "sweet spot", then f4 is the sharpest setting on the S3 lens.....so if lighting condition/DOF permits, use f4.:) :)

Added:

I went to your flickr and see that the pics are well exposed. Those without sky details are due to high dynamic range....you can use 2 technics as far as I know (the seniors may have more ways to do it):

1. Use HDR
2. Expose the mid range, like compensate the EV till you have overexpose the sky a bit and underexpose the ground a bit, then do PP when you are back. You can either do dodge/burn or tone map to PP.

These are all I know.:embrass:

Hi 2 questions:

1. What do you mean by up the blacks??

erm i use photoshop lightroom to edit my pics.. there is this colour function called blacks. or in picasa its called shadows.

2. What do you mean by optimising the aperture? If you mean the "sweet spot", then f4 is the sharpest setting on the S3 lens.....so if lighting condition/DOF permits, use f4.
so when you use manual mode you always use f4? how bout shooting things like the horizon or the sunset?

erm dont mind be asking another questions? what do u mean by high dynamic range?

and here comes the noobest question.. whats EV? is the dodge/burn technique the same as HDR?

haha dont mind my many many questions =)

O, I never use both before and may be Photoshop CS2 also have n I duno about it.:) What does it do?

erm i use photoshop lightroom to edit my pics.. there is this colour function called blacks. or in picasa its called shadows.

If you want sharp pic, use f4, provided f4 DOF is good for you loh. If you need other DOF, then you have to deviate from f4. Also if lighting is not right (ie too bright/dim, also need to change f/stop...landscape shooting, I think f4 is good:)
so when you use manual mode you always use f4? how bout shooting things like the horizon or the sunset?

The explanation is here.

EV=exposure value. Like the exposure compensation function in ya S3 is to compensate the EV of a shot.
and here comes the noobest question.. whats EV?

Normally, when you adj the brightness/contrast of a pic, the entire pic is affected, dodge/burn is a technique that allows you to adj the brightness/contrast of a pic partially. Google it and you will find many tutorial in the net.
is the dodge/burn technique the same as HDR?

Its ok, I am new too, still learning, just trying to share whatever, I know to help.:D
haha dont mind my many many questions =)

hmm... hey how do u do IR pics?

hmm... hey how do u do IR pics?

you'll need the lens adapter set also.. and like what lastboltnut said, mount an IR filter.. and a tripod, cos the IR filter cuts down alot of light.. the IR filter looks almost opaque..

ooo how much does a 52mm IR filter cost?

hey guys have u ever tried FOILAGE mode,
did you notice that the pictures are better satuated and nicer.. for pics like greenary, the horizon, the sky ect.

cos i prefer to work on the P Tv Av M modes, i was wondering what colour setting is the cloest to that.

you think
contrast +1
sharpness +2
satuation +2
green +1
blue +1
red +1
skin tone +1

can match the colour settings on FOILAGE?

previously someone asked me to use vivid but it doesn't get that same effect/ level of colours as of FOILAGE.

cheers!=)
