Out of the 3 factors that affect the DOF, the dist between the cam and the obj affects the DOF most....therefore, to get shallow DOF, move close to the obj....but for a person, you cannot possibly close up like the feather, which is much smaller than a person....so, you cannot expect the background of the person in your portrait to have background so blur like the feather pic....this is the limitation of the S3 small sensor, you may have to live with it. One other way is to post process your pic.

I like #6. To improve, make sure that the beek is not cut off. Also, try to give more space infront, towards where the eyes are looking.

After using the S3IS camera, my demand for photos seems to be going higher and higher. Is it normal?


I guess they are talking about large sensor. Reaching up to F22 or something.

Err.... its not that sensor that reaches f22, its the lens. Anyway, you want a smaller F number (larger apeture) if you want to reduce your depth of field.

You can get the blur background for people. Same way as shooting the feather, zoom to more then 100mm.

I have been reading the past few posts and realised f4 is mentioned quite abit...just curious why f4 produce one of the better pictures? Any technical website to explain it as well? I too have difficulties achieving a shallow DOF

For S3, the crop factor is 6, thus, on S3 specs it is stated 6-72mm equivalent to 36-432mm. So for 35mm equilvalent of 100mm focal length, it is 100/6mm on S3.

Can see the zoom focal length on screen or not...I cannot remember liao. But I know you can see the focus distant on the display. Dun mix up manual focus distant with lens focal length, one decides which obj is sharp and the other decides how far you zoom in/out (FOV in another word).

Hi iboey,

f4 is the aperture setting on S3 that can produce very sharp pic. But if you 1 shallow DOF, you need to open up aperture to the widest posible, like f2.8 or f3.5.....then sharpen you pic with PS....

Ya, its 100mm focal length, in 35mm film equivalent. Gets quite confusing, all these numbers....
