Hi guys, fyi there is a new version that came out today.
version 1.33 for all lens module
Expecially excited by the new scene mode.>>>
[New option : SCENE modes]
The following 5 modes has been added to the SCENE mode; [Soft Focus], [Cross Process], [Toy Camera], [Miniaturize], and [High Contrast B & W].

wow...looking forward to the high-contrast bw...though the current one quite good already

The Ricoh GXR's output is certainly better than the m43rds I have used. It may just be my camera for travels!

yea its a nice camera..love to shoot b&w with this camera

I don't normally shoot from the waist but with the GXR's snap mode, its really impressive... here's a few "for fun" shots...

Was shopping for a neck strap to replace the one come with GXR as it is not secure enough and too the material is too rough, very uncomfortable to hang on the neck..even just for a short while.

Then I stumble across ST-3 which appear to be a good choice, genuine leather and even the nylon portion is of higher grade compare to the one come with GXR.

However the price was very steep, retail price $54, and shops are selling between $35 to $45. Was about to give up the until i call MS color (AMK HUB). They are selling for only $18. I believe they are left with only 2 sets now. Anyone GXR user interested please act quickly.

The reason for such low price is because this is a specially edition Ricoh made for customer who pre-order GXR prior the launch. It is exactly ST-3, the only tell tail sign is the wording on the leather strap is GXR instead of Ricoh.

If u are looking for a strap for GXR, grab one while still available.

A12 50mm after a morning walk, we were seating on a bench around the lake, under morning sun... and my daughter just chatting away while i took a few snap of her..

Hi there!
I took a look at ur flickr site. Nice pics u got there...esp the baby, ur girl wearing the helmet and the one u posted here.
Nice work with the GRD3 too...
Did u just get the gxr a12 50? is the price still at 1k+?

Hey friend,

Thanks for your kind words. started with GXR A12 50mm, yes is still cost about K1.2k body and lens. I later trade in my GRD3 for a pre own A12 28mm. very happy with the 2 lens set up :)

If budget is a concern, buy second hand, can get a set with both lens for less than 2k.. some even throw in VF2.

GXR's focusing is competent enough for most of the situation. But it still has some problem if the scene is too contrasty eg back lit. In the picture below, it took me a few attempts to get it right, at first it either confirmed it has lock focus (which it hasn't) or it hunt and gave up. Then i remember in one of the firmware, Ricoh added "Pinpoint" in spot focus mode. With a pinpoint tiny focus patch i manage to avoid the contrasty area and focus on the medium lit area.

I have to admit GXR is far from perfect, but kudos to Ricoh for being very thoughtful and has given lots of tools to their user to move along and around their obstacles. Ricoh (both GRD and GXR) has always been my teaching camera, not that i teach anyone , but the camera teach me :)

Ricoh has just announced 4th function-enhancing firmware upgrade for its GXR system!!!

http://www.photographyblog.com/news/function-enhancing_firmware_update_for_ricoh_gxr/

Ricoh has announced the imminent release of the 4th function-enhancing firmware upgrade for its GXR system. Available tomorrow, 31 August 2011, this major update has been “developed in response to opinions and requests received from a large number of customers via surveys submitted at customer registration time and other channels”, the company says. The 4th function-enhancing firmware update brings greater focusing precision, new aspect ratio choices for the “auto resize zoom” function, custom white balance setting for flash photography, new intermediate ISO speeds, enhanced customisability for the ISO AUTO-HI setting, the ability to display the electronic level gauge when shooting with the self-timer and new vignetting options for the cross-process and the toy camera filters. The GR LENS A12 28mm and GR LENS A12 50mm camera units additionally benefit from two new shutter speed options (bulb and time) in manual exposure mode

<Enhanced functions for all camera units>

1. Greater focusing precision now possible.
・In order to increase the precision of manual focusing, the focus assist function has been added. Two modes can be selected, with the focus being checked by strengthening outlines or contrast.
・It is possible to magnify the image while shooting to make it easier to focus. In addition to magnifying the central part of the image, it is possible to display the magnified area across the entire screen.
The image quality for 4x and 8x magnification has also been further enhanced, and the area to be magnified can be moved with the directional pad.
・A setting can be made to automatically eliminate the display magnification after the picture is taken.

2. Aspect ratio choices added for auto resize zoom.
Auto resize zoom can now be used with aspect ratios 1:1, 3:2, and 16:9.

3. Flash firing now possible when making the white balance manual setting.
When setting the white balance manually in the actual shooting environment, it is now possible to make the setting while firing the flash.

4. When making ISO AUTO-HI settings, it is now possible to define the shutter speed for changing ISO sensitivity at the same time as specifying the ISO maximum sensitivity.

5. The electronic level can now be displayed when shooting with the self-timer.

6. For the vignetting setting for shooting with the cross process and toy camera options, it is now possible to select from the weak, strong, and off settings. When the firmware update is done, the vignetting setting is initialized as shown below.
Cross process: Off
Toy camera: Weak

7. ISO sensitivity settings are now more detailed.
In addition to the previous settings, it is now possible to select ISO-LO*, ISO 250, ISO 320, ISO 500, ISO 640, ISO 1000, ISO 1250, ISO 2000, and ISO 2500.
*This added setting is only for the GR LENS A12 28mm and GR LENS A12 50mm camera units

<Enhanced functions only for the GR LENS A12 28mm and GR LENS A12 50mm camera units>

8. Bulb and time can now be selected.
B (bulb) and T (time) can now be selected as the shutter speed in manual exposure mode. With “B,” the exposure continues while the shutter release button is pressed, and with “T,” the shutter release button is pressed to start and end the exposure. For both, the exposure is forcibly ended when 180 seconds have elapsed.

The full screen magnification is fantastic! Is good even at 8x. Making manual focus much decisive and enjoyable. Only issue is hand shakes started to amplify at this level of magnification. A VF-2 would come in handy.

Partial magnification still remain as useless, Ricoh should just drop it and saved us one step in toggle through the setting. Now have to press twice OK/Menu to jump from partial to full screen.

The focus assist (a sort of focus peeking) is icing on the cake. Taking the already very usable manual focus (slightly) further. I said "slightly" because it doesn't really add too much decisiveness in focusing, may be because the quality of the magnification is already good enough. But this is just first impression... I may be wrong, it is yet to see how it perform under different lighting and subject..

Decided to test out the new GXR focus assist function in the field. Woke up early in the morning while the children still asleep, sneak out with my camera bag & tripod and head down to a near by park.

Although A12 50mm is a fantastic macro lens, the AF in macro was a bit of a let down. Coupled with low resolution partial enlarge display, precise focusing in macro (be it AF or manual) has always been a hit and miss affair.

With the improved enlarge display and focus assist, I wonder how much will it enhance the macro functionality.

The following photo was taken on tripod. In the past I would have leave the focus to spot AF (pinpoint). But since the subject is so small, there is little control over placing the focus point precisely where I wanted it to be. I would shoot, enlarge, review, re-shoot and repeat the same process until I get it right. Though this method works, it is tiresome and took out a whole lot of fun from shooting macro.

So how did the new functions perform? In one word... WOW!!!!! The combination of better enlarge display + focus assist in manual focus has brought the A12 50mm Macro functionality to the next level. It now let you clearly see where the focus is and as you turn the focus ring, you can literally see the shallow deep of field highlighted by the focus assist swept from one end of the subject to another end. All you need to do is just to stop turning the focus ring when the focus (depth of field) reached where you want it to be.

Following photo was cropped from above, you can see the focus is at the center of the droplet.

However, with a tiny twist on the focus ring, I was able to bring the focus from center to the edge of the droplet. The control allow so much precision, it was effortless, almost felt like extension of my hand.

Just before I can continue to shoot a few more comparisons, my phone rang, kids was up from bed and its time to bring them out for Saturday breakfast :)
