Ricoh GR Digital users fall in!

I just purchased the Ricoh GR D after meeting a guy in New York who was shooting with a hand held flash, it was syncing with the camera wirelesly, I have not been able to be put back in touch with him and am now living in Spain, am yet to receive the camera but want to get a jump on things and have read about the Sygma flashes recommended, it seemed like he had a smaller flash unit, does anyone know how this works and if it is possible with GRD to do this.

Firstly, a warm welcome to joining the GRD family. Now to answer ur question, it is possible to sync the GRD with the flash wirelessly. U jus have to purchase a flash which allows u to set to slave mode, a transmitter which sits in the hotshoe of the GRD and a receiver which u fit either at the hotshoe of the flash or a cable which fits into the PC sync outlet of the flash (make sure ur flash has this).. this will allow u to sync the GRD with the flash.. however u will lose TTL metering and will have to set the flash manually.. hope this answers ur question ;)

Attached is a photosite of a japanese GRD user who uses this technique w the GRD n a nikon SB-800.. the transmitter n receiver he use is known as microsync..one of the smallest i have seen.. but its not going to come cheap :(

Hey Tan131
Thanks for the welcome, and the info. Thats good to know that there is a way to shoot like that, great for intersting shots and hopefully stills. I am looking forward to figuring it all out. What is TTL metering, or what does it stand for sorry for ignorance but I guess its all about learning. Most of the people here send you to flickr, is this a good site to place images, are they secure from being downloaded, and if so is there the ability to allow someone to download, lots of questions and I am sure more to follow. Thanks for getting back with info. Looking forward to posting some images soon, I have taken thousands taken with a Cannon PowerShot S500 and am looking forward to this portable major upgrade of the GRD.

Big flash (nikon sb800) ......Small GRD...weird combo sia.

able to flash upon triggering the shutter.

I have just received my new GRD and looking at the manual am wondering where the settings are for long exposures, I dont have the user guide yet and have not been able to get the info from the web. Can someone give advice which settings to go to.
I am going on a hunt for wild bore tomorrow, and want to make sure that I can point and shoot to the best effect, can anyone recommend a straight forward setting for a possibly sunny day or overcast cloudy day. Thanks for helping out a new user with no instructions.

Hi Bee Knees, u have to go manual for long exposure.. A-mode limits the shutter to 1 Sec... i dunno how u are going to shoot wild bores with the GRD..wun u have to be very close?! if u realli are.. den i suggest turning off the flash, set to snap mode and go for it :) there's realli no "set" settings for light conditions..depends on the situation n ur preference.. since its digital unlike my old GR1V.. there's no reason not to experiment.. have fun with ur new toy :)

I recommend you give them a call... Their reply was a day late for me, n i ended up paying more n not getting the lens hood n adapter for free... :|

But i take it as i was paying for good service, n not regret it :)

Ricoh releases third function-enhancing firmware update
for GR DIGITAL
User requests reflected in update for functional improvement

Tokyo, Japan – November 20 – Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Masamitsu Sakurai) announced today that it will release on November 22 a third function-enhancing firmware update for its GR DIGITAL* high-resolution compact digital camera, which has been well received for more than a year since its release.
* The GR DIGITAL is a high-end digital camera popular with pro photographers, high-end amateurs, and photo aficionados that achieves high resolution in a compact body. It was first released October 21, 2005 and is open priced.
The function-enhancing firmware can be downloaded free of charge from the Ricoh website. The following features can be added to the GR DIGITAL by installing this firmware.

(1) New optional sizes can be set for the JPEG images recorded simultaneously when taking photos in RAW(3264 × 2448). "N3260" (NORMAL 3264 × 2448) and "N640" (NORMAL 640 x 480) can be set in addition to the conventional "F3260" (FINE 3260 × 2448). This allows for more shots to be recorded.
(For example, with a 512 MB SD card, RAW+F3264 allows for 33 shots, while RAW+N640 allows for 42 shots.)
(2) With a 3:2 aspect ratio (vertical to horizontal ratio of an image), "N3:2"(NORMAL 3260 × 2176) can now be selected in addition to "RAW3:2" (RAW 3264 x 2176) or "F3:2"(FINE 3264 x 2176). This allows for more shots to be recorded.
(For example, with a 512 MB SD card, F3:2 allows for 177 shots, while N3:2 allows for 308 shots.)
(3) The exposure adjustment range when shooting with Auto Bracket (function for shooting multiple shots at different exposures) can be selected at ±0.3 EV in addition to ±0.5 EV. This allows for finer shooting with Auto Bracket.
*Auto Bracket function cannot be used in RAW mode (same as before).

In addition to the above-mentioned functions, improved auto focus speed and focusing precision in macro photography.

Function-enhancing firmware updates are the result of numerous opinions and requests from customers through the GR BLOG and through questionnaire information provided at user registration in Japan. The first update was released on March 24 and the second on July 28. Many GR DIGITAL users downloaded those, and much positive feedback has been received.
