Review: Unveiling of Olympus E-PL3 and the E-P3

Do you have any on long exposure to see from the 12mm? Grateful if you have. ;-)

just back into town this evening.... give me a day or 2 before i reply ? thanks

Sure, looking forward to the comparisons. The Samsung NX11 has a bigger sensor than EP3 and EPL3 right? BTW what are their prices?

ok, ......

- the EP3's are different sized sensors and have different lens mounts
- the NX11's screen is LED vs LCD on ALL other brands' ..... Samsung wins on this count over everyone else
- the NX's have a very limited choice of lenses vs 4/3 system's larger and growing pool of lens choices
- the NX has a larger body profile
- handling ergonomics .... both are good but PEN's are generally more pocketable
- Menu user interface ........ NX's interface is an easy navigate .... but so is Canon, Nikon and Panny's..... Oly needs to improve on this
- NONE of the EVF's on the market today ..... whether built-in or mounted cannot 'make it' except the Fuji's X100 ..... currently

WHATEVER it is....... NO camera comes pre-packaged with skills ........ yes, the image sensor of m4/3 is of course smaller than 1.5 or 1.6 crop factor cameras ........ no matter what brand .... I'll just end up with highly resolved crap with larger file sizes if I dont keep working on the basics like perspectives, composition, exposure readings etc etc

BTW ..... ALL the pics of the E-PL3, the E-P3 , and the lenses at the start of this thread ... were shot with a VERY cheap, beat-up and ageing Samsung EX-1 PnS

BOTH the E-P3 and the E-PL3 can work with slave flash transmitters and receivers

Below the E-P3 with external OEM slave flash unit and triggers at 1/200sec
ep3_at_200.jpg

HOWEVER at higher speeds shutter starts to close faster cutting off exposure
Below at 1/320 .... notice black shadow at bottom of image
ep3_at_320.jpg

And at 1/400sec the shadow from shutter curtain is very obvious

Conclusion: This is great news if you want to use your favorite flash gun tethered via a regular PT type $30 trigger and transmitter ..... just keep sync speed at 1/200sec or lower

Same same for the E-PL3 .... it works with a wireless flash trigger

apologies .... the EP3 written on the paper should have been changed to E-PL3 ... forgot to do it (ANYWAY the subject in the background is the EP3 )
At 1/200sec (Inserted edit 8hrs later:"actually looking at the image below again , there seems to be a slight dark band at top of image....... looks like max flash sync speed on the E-PL3 should be 1/180sec or 1/150sec .... did not shoot at these speeds and cameras have just returned to Olympus )

At 1/250sec it becomes very obvious we have exceeded max sync speed

Looking at the shadows cast...... the 2nd shutter curtain closing in the E-P3 is moving in a BOTTOM-UP direction

AND the 2nd shutter curtain closing in the E-PL3 is moving in a TOP-BOTTOM direction

Just a bit of Trivia to share with you

----------

So in conclusion, the 2 cams can accept flash triggers and that max flash sync speeds for both cameras seem to be at the 1/200sec mark ........... very very decent
