Review of the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25 mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens

Lovely Bokeh. I might just replace my 20mm with this one. :)

Indoor Field Test

- Versatile with effective range at 50mm. The so called must have fixed focal length lens everyone should have. It render pic that is close to true perspective of human eye.

- The speed is another biggest advantage of this lens. Indoor shot without flash and I could shot the lower ISO if possible. That overcome one of the major disadvantage of smaller censor of 4/3.

Movie AF
This lens does not feature MSC technology as latest Olympus m4/3 lens. It certainly can track the subject and re-AF, but lag on AF during move mode.

Here is field test video with constantly changing AF point.

It might work differently on a GH2 though.

You might be right. Bear in mind that I am testing with EP1, where the Movie capability is not one of da best in m4/3 range.
Would review again with GF3 in coming week once I have it.

nice review michael and eddie!!!
having able to try this lens for a while yesterday with the EP1 and EP3...
EP1 + 25 F1.4 = fast...
EP3 + 25 F1.4 = blazing fast...
the touch screen auto focus of the EP3 is surprisingly fast too....

i am really poison by michael and eddie for once...!!! damn tempted now... lol

cheers

Cost wise, any indication? Same ballpark as the new 12mm f2?

Seriously poisoned...

Possibly cheaper. The 12/f2 is 700 vs 600 USD for the 25/f1.4.

Personally, the 25/1.4 is probably more suited for general use vs the 12 unless you strictly like landscape and want to do some street.

But if you want bokeh and all, probably better luck with the 25.

I think Adorama taking pre-orders now.... go check there.....
imho for a 25mm (50mm) f1.4 Summilux Adorama's price is or even Singapore's slightly higher price (vs. an online retailer) is a real bang for the buck

But lets not talk price here (do that in the M4/3 subforum please ) ..... this is a review thread not a price checking thread ha ha ha :)

thanks for understanding

No problem. :)

However it would be good if there are comparisons with the popular 20/1.7 lens to see if this Leica branded one is worth the extra money while losing out on portability.

Personally, I like the bokeh better. Less busy, and more milky. :)

Manage to borrow a panny f1.7 for comparison. Regret for the poor settings I made on testing with these lenses, I was in a rush and only had the 20mm f1.7 for less than 5 minutes

Hi wong,

All your images uploaded at Photobucket are now Bandwidth Exceeded.

Do consider using ClubSNAP Gallery. http://gallery.clubsnap.com

I tested Leica 25mm on GF3, however I suspect because the GF3 I have, is a pre-production set and I could not read the video file either on Mac or Window.
My observe is that, it takes time to hunt for focus. Shifting from infinity to subject at 1meter take about 3 sec. Good point is that, the continuous C-AF is smooth and totally silence. There is not any "click" or "hunt on focus" sound at all.
