Review of Sony Alpha NEX-5

If you don't mind no AF.. you can get the NEX A-mount adapter and a cheap Sony 50/1.8 which would give you a short portrait lens.

Will have to wait for a native E-mount prime portrait and standard lens though, only very vague rumours at this point. Not suprising that Sony is concentrating only on the basic kit zooms and the consumer favourite all in one zoom for now - these are popular amongst their target audience the PnS upgraders.

err... thanks for the intended help.. I'm not looking for background blur in macro shots but rather in Portraits. ... I had a Ricoh film camera with f1.4 50mm prime 30 yrs ago (I was 12)....

The best background blur in a micro system was the Panasonic 20mm. But that system only has Head shots bokeh, not halfbody.

Can a lens render bokeh in headshots but not halfbody??

Go to the links for bigger image and checkout the background...

Any lens can have bokeh for halfbody portrait, even PnS. Tt's the quality of the bokeh that you are after...not juz bokeh or not bokeh...probably you are looking for something that gives you similar perspective as the 50mm f1.8?

any lens can have lens blur, even at f/8. have you tried using a lens at 200mm or 300mm before?

understanding how to achieve lens blur is important, not just the equipment. granted, a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 will make it easier to achieve your "bokeh", but that doesn't mean that a standard kit lens cannot attain portraits with background thrown out of focus. same applies for a slow lens.

all you have to do is make sure that the background is far away, while the subject is comparatively near. there are 3 ways to throw background out of focus, fast lenses with large maximum apertures is but one way.

if you buy the nex-5 with 18-200, confirm plus chop you can produce half-body bokeh. don't believe, just buy first, if cannot i show you how. :bsmilie:

Sensor size is also a factor btw.

Go to the library and get a book on photography kid.

HAHAHA! OMG that's funny. Considering that, based on your posts, it's you that needs to go read a book. :)

Now go away and let the adults talk here, ok?

FYI: The moment you started going on about an A900 firmware in the NEX-5 thread, you already became a troll.

i will only say this once to all - be nice.

tarandip has been deregistered as it has been found to be a clone of simranjits, who was previously de-registered.

Didnt know hes simranjits, but then , I didnt know why hes was deregistered in the first place also lol.

OK back to Nex discussion and not get sidetracked =)

I hope it goes on sale soon . Sony should sell it early so that the rich tourist can buy the nex and bring it to SA to see the matches !

my only concern is :

the menu system would be revamped with a quick menu for quick access to frequent use items like ISO, AF, Mode etc.
More short cuts rather going thru the menu list all the time...

Those who complain on the menu need not worry, as the nex 5 is designed more as a pns style camera.... when come to real life usage, in reality u need very little adjustment as the camera encompass a wide range of scene mode in auto mode,
even if u shoot in prioity mode a,s,p. u rarely need any drastic compensation... as this camera had a dr surpassing most ofthe conventional dslr from the canon, nikon ...
except for fuji s5 pro, an average alpha dslr had a higher highlight range than it competitors, based on what i had used and evaluated this little nex 5 had a DR that probably can outgunned the the FF dslr from the canikon.... and it was only jpeg..i didn't test it raw file yet.

Hi, Both suit me fine but I am more suited to new technologies in a new camera to explore and learn how to get a DSLR IQ in a P&S body which has more image processing and less optical sharpness in the small lens design.
