Review: Leica Noctilux M 50mm f0.95

Not surprisingly, I found the Noct sharper than my 1970s Lux (3rd version).

The focus throw is longer as it is a bigger lens, but smoother than the lux.

However, the lux wasn't doing too badly, the small size meant that I could

react faster and sneak more shots unnoticed.

Somewhere near Centerpoint, I switched lens, so that I could capture images of the Noct on Film.

(guess which is film vs digital, noct vs lux)

I pondered who was the target audience for this lens....

really...who uses the noctilux ?

with 2cm of clarity at its widest opening.

Photojournalist and street shooters generally prefer wides.

Sharp-shooters would prefer the Summilux or the Summicron ASPH for resolution.

The answer isn't so obvious...

this is the second last post. Next post, I will try the Noct in dim light.

Thanks for the HUGE assist Raytoei !!!

My thumb kept getting into the vf lol !!

If girls can dream of owning a Birkin handbag some day in her lifetime ..... why cant boys dream of a Leica Noctilux ? :)

My dream is to have a Hermes Barda 35 messenger with a Billingham insert containing a Leica M9T with a Noctilux. Price around SGD65000...

Well, much as it removes the worry of focusing, both lenses I would imagine would be near identical at such a small aperture.

Last post.

The next two photos says it all, i turned off the lights and room was almost pitch dark except for the candle and
lights from the neighbors.

it was shot at iso 1600 at 1/15 and f0.95.

focusing was a little difficult but i managed to get 3 out of 4 shots accurate (well at least for myself).

Well, in conclusion:

The Noctilux is a gem of a lens, it sees in the dark. Nothing comes close.

That's the number one reason why anyone would spend a
small fortune on a heavy lens that's a challenge to focus and
carry around for street shooting.

thanks!

Did you use a magnifier? The photos are great :)

I think the characteristic of this lens is in this shot. Awesome.

I'll go with the LHSA 50mm F1.4 lux anytime. Classic + modern.

Its chrome, its classic, its SEXY, black are for mere mortals :bsmilie: (pun intended) :sticktong

Seems like lots of purple fringing to me ?

Hmmm........... its too big for the M9 after seeing it..... none the less I'm sure it handles well. ;)

I was given the chance to take a few test shots using the noct 0.95 at a used camera store. Great sharpness and color, but lots of CA (mostly purple, some times blue). Not sure if it is just the particular example that I tested or it is intrinsic to this lens. (BTW, The pix posted here are too small to really see if there is CA.) Compared with the Noct f1.0, the CA from the 0.5 seems much more. I know it can be corrected in PS, but...you get what I mean. (maybe this new noct is meant to shoot B&W haha..)

thanks to eddie for letting me handle the MP-9 and Noctilux when we met these few days...
some thoughts of how i feel as a machine gun DSLR user... my RF user experience is very limited to using non-leica cameras and lenses...

1. this lens has to be appreciated at F0.95, and i feel that u would not need this lens if you do not use it at F0.95 often unless you have deep wallets or u do it for a living needing this lens to survive.
2. depth of field is so thin at F0.95, it is very hard to get things in focus especially when you want to compose/recompose your shots... very often leaning yourself forward/backward to focus does the trick easier...
3. lens protrudes out and blocks the lower right part of the viewfinder... it can be addressed easily as i find most RF shooters shooting with both eyes open...
4. lens is heavy and does not feel very "balanced" to me... but the small form factor of this setup compare to a big nikon D3 still wins hands down in terms of size and weight...
5. lens is of top-notch quality and feels like it too...
6. it requires alot of skill and experience to handle this beast...
7. depending on your purpose/intention for use... and if it's for street shooting, i feel it's very challenging if your intention is to harness the potential with it's F0.95
i would prefer a wider lens instead for street shooting instead...

i was fortunate enough to be asked by ed9119 to try the ridiculously fast leica noctilux 50mm/f0.95. yes f**ing 0.95. oh yes, this baby also costs USD11k a pop. that's the price of a sedan in some debt-ridden european countries at the moment.

when i was first handed the lens, the first thing i noticed is that it was massive, almost announcing it's supremacy of being the world's fastest lens. i was certain that this was not a stay on lens on my m9. it weighs more than the m9 i was using to test the lens.

the aperture and focusing rings were as smooth as the butter yakun slap on the toast. however, it is a long turn from minimum to infinity focus, reducing my agility. i was so slow that the guy with the m6 (the owner of chiifcameras) had to pose for me to focus. to be fair, my skills were the main reason.

i shoot street with my m body and always preferred a wider lens, and i thought 50mm will be a little too long for my liking. i was surprised it worked for me without me compromising my preference of being close to my subject.

i am not a professional photographer nor an equipment reviewer, so there is no shots to compare the depth of field, brick-wall or vignetting tests. this is just me doing the 'usability' test. and since this is a mother of all bokeh, most shots are left at f0.95 or f1.4. i am not going to bore you, or myself, with what might the sweet spot or how f-something is sharper than others.

back to my 'usability' assessment, i have the following notes

1. this lens is massive and it attracts attention. this is a non-issue if i am taking street portraits but for stealth street, this lens, despite its engineering feats, is unsuitable for me. this lens make my m setup look like a disproportionate slr.

2. while the stealthiness is lost, the ability to do subject isolation using this lens for street is brilliant. i can isolate subjects with ease in tight places.

3. this lens is freaking heavy. it makes the setup heavy. it makes me sluggish and prevent to keep going like the energizer battery. each gram costs usd15, i can use in the reduction of weight and cost.

4. focusing is a hit and miss, at 0.95, my lack of precision in focusing shows. this is by no means is the flaw of the lens, but when used by me, we are flawed.

if i had more time with this lens.....

the photos can be viewed at http://flic.kr/s/aHsjvKh9nm i will try to upload them here but my firefox keep crashing for some reason.
