Resolved: Sony SG's stand on issue of Light Leak on A7, A7r

Update from my source you need to book in your set for them to check your camera.

From there they will order and replace the affected parts, because a7, a7s& a7r have different type of parts.

Best is to call their hotline before go down.

Don't quote me hor I am just help to ask.

updated today's email exchange in the post above.

1. Will make a call to the person tmr.

2. that's interesting and worth trying again since I've to collect my camera anyways. But previous experience from the Sony CSO was a firm nil though.

3. Have written about this on the US Sony Community forums. The same place where the silicon ring fix was posted.

Thanks Keith for your persistence follow up with Sony :)

for me i may want to see how it's fixed first before i send my set in.. though this issue may not be affecting my shooting yet.

btw can i ask if this light leak also happen on A7S or later batch of A7/R considering they are produced at least after this issue being highlighted?

Thanks Keith but for most this does not work.

Sony refuses to give the ring free to owners of A7 series camera like other market.

If u send in your perfectly good camera to let them diagnose and change part, if necessary for light leak issue, u may come back with other issues and if ur camera has not much warranty left, any new problem due to light leak issue may not be covered by warranty in the future. Hence trying to solve a problem which may not affect ur style of shooting may end up with a serious problem which may cost u $$$ to fix next time. The amicable and satisfactory solution is to get the rubber ring. Period.

Frankly I'm hoping for the rubber ring too but I will wait it out to see what they do to my camera first.

Got non warranty sets with light leak issues , I believe Sony will still honor without charges.

To me it's always better to know there's an option , instead of 'buy already n u r screwed'. I'm sure there are people who won't send their sets in since it doesn't affect them anyway :)

Since this is a topic close to the hearts of many Sony users, making this a sticky.

I think this issue doesn't affect 99.9% of users :) unless u do long exposures in bright daylight with stacked NDs for one.

To my understanding (which may be wrong) , A7s and the later batches of A7R are not affected. U can always do a simple test to verify whether is your set affected.

Lastly ... If it ain't broken , don't fix it.

To me , this was a way for me to see whether is Sony really interested in showing it's commitment to its customers and I'm glad they took this in stride & another reason being that I read a lot of complaints about this issue locally but kinda wondered why no one did anything as a community so I just tried my luck.

Welcome :) and I'm eagerly awaiting to see what they do to fix my A7.

Hope it's not a : your set doesn't have the light leak issue so.... But anyway if this is true I gonna get a black and white letter certifying this set is indeed light leak free.

Yap i have plan to use it for long exposures in bright daylight with stacked ND filters and will see if it affects the pics or not.

I did this before with my 5D3 which claims to be having same issue but surprisingly it didn't affect the pics when i shot long exposures in bright daylight so i never take any action to fix it.

As mentioned in the first posts, they didn't claim it as a product defect but then why do they fix it in later batches (if they're no more such issue in later batches)?
Doesn't it contradict with what Sony is doing (fixing it in the later batches)?
To me, that means only Sony SG doesn't want to admit this is a defect.

hi,

sorry for the late reply. Sony called yesterday and we had a proper discussion. In short, the fix for the light leak will be to anyone's satisfaction but I will only share when I've gotten back my set (say no use, show proof better right ? )

To me, the email response by Sony has already been very clear that they do acknowledge the light leak issue, their willingness to do something about it already implies that right? For me, what they do to follow up is far more important than what they say :)

Took my a7 yesterday from services centre and go for a spin this morning to see if it still leak. With the rubber ring they provide there are still light leak. Don't know it's my adapter leak, will try again tomorrow just using the kit lens.

Guys, what if I want to buy the A7R from 313? Can I request them for the ring fix on the spot when buying? Or their new sets are actually fixed on this problem?

Sony isn't providing any info on this (which batch affected etc ) hence if it worries you, send the camera in ba. Here-say is later batches of A7r don have this issue.

Pls do show them this thread and say u are requesting for the ring fix specifically as their counter staff may not all be in the know.

my A7r has leakage from the area around the alpha emblem...

am using with metabones mk3 + 16-35L II...

f2.8, ISO 12800, 13s. this was with ceiling light.

f2.8, ISO 12800, 15s. then i shined a torch around the entire lens mount area.

i just got the body yesterday sia, have not even shoot a properly landscape photo.

think i have to get it fixed before heading overseas for star trails and milky way. :(

anyway i read from one of the links that the fix consists of 2 steps?

https://www.wimarys.com/sony-a7r-light-leak-fix-images-and-test/

I sent my A7r in and the tech repair guy told me A7r light leak fix involves 2 steps:

-Added dark sheeting strips inside the camera body to ensure no leaks occur there
-A custom made rubber band that slides on the camera lens mount to fully seal that area too.

has anyone confirm the bold step with Sony SG? :dunno:

oh ya, i tried with LA-EA4 + Minolta 50/f1.4, it exhibited the same leak albeit not as jialat as the metabones.

Hi sorry , missed this post. Problem with a sticky is that it doesn't show on the main page on the mobile app.

In your case I'll say best move is to send it back to Sony since it's an acknowledged issue with the A7. Fixing it yourself might be problematic if something screws up.

Just sent mine today for sensor cleaning and check for light leak
Btw mine have no light leak issue(maybe), just give them extra work to do =p
