also there is an 15-25/2.8 wide angle zoom lens:D

man.. it looks like a weapon. can it fire missiles?

Find out why this thing is a joke.
261mp?Don't count on it.They're using their standards of measurement instead of the standard standards.
And so much more:bsmilie:

that's interesting. I have no idea what you are talking about.
261 mp is based on the pixel dimensions that this sensor records. It's 6x17 inch
What is wrong with their standard of measurement? What's your beef with RED anyway? I've spoken to a number of people who have used the RED One and they're quite happy with it.

this was a Tim Ludin's experience with RED

"I use a RED since January. In fact my partner and I have two now.
Ever since I was very impressed by its still frame quality.
2 weeks ago, we shot a big comercial for a telecom company here in switzerland.
The ad-agency also booked a still photographer for the prinst stuff. He used his hassy 39mp.
During the shooting the customer checked my laptop with the RED files. I was constantly rendering some still frames and quicktimes
to give the agency some stuff to feel good about.
The agency and the customer coundn't believe what they saw. Even the still photographer (I'm one too) was totaly blown away by
the RED stills.
During lunch break the whole set was discussing the future of still and motion photography.
I told them that the epic will come out next year and about the rumors etc.
From then on the still photographer was joking about learning the motion camera work or he might be out of work...

Dont start to pick my writing apart. All I want to say is "the change is here". Like I said it months before. Faster than we all thougt.
By the way, the ad-angency was Jung von Matt. The best agency in the german speaking part of Europe.
The photographer was one of the best in Switzerland.
So this shows that also these big pros can see it coming and they like the idea of shooting high-end (midformat) and high-end motion with just one cam. Not ideal for everyone, but great for the ad shooters.

And dont question RED to much. They will deliver. They did before.
Jim, Graeme Nattress (is posting here) and the team will pull it off again.
They have the best customer service I know to date. They respond quickly as hell. Now think Hassy, Phase etc....

Interesting times, crazy times.

Tim "

Thus I said,go read up more on it.
You're not going to extract much cushy information to fall on if you're just bitting one piece of this review off a single person.
I've nothing against RED.

Read and then judge.

Don't know what you're talking about... I don't think you also know what we're talking about when we raise the RED...

Basically, RED has cracked the video + still imaging solution with a price point that is considered very reasonable... and this means that the technology is now there to apply to small sensors found on DSLRs... and we would likely see a convergence of video + still imaging on a consumer level product very soon... and at a price point that will be very acceptable to the man in the street...

You should really read the commentaries by seasoned pros both in the video and still image industry... they're basically saying that RED has basically muscled in on the pro video market cos their camera (at $40k) costs a fraction of what a pro video camera would cost (with interchangeable lenses to boot) and still provide superb image quality... so pro makers like SONY (market leader) had better watch out... and what's more, the camera takes superb still images unlike the pro video cameras that are currently available...

That's the hype!

No one's talking about the man in the street buying a 6 x 17 sensor camera my friend... pass some of what you're snorting over my man!:bsmilie:

Soon?
Still image and video is already being incorporated into consumer DSLRS.Thought at it's infant stage,it only need more R&D and work by these giants.

The kind of implementation at the current moment is neither here nor there... as SONY has clearly indicated that it did not implement video or liveview as it is currently not satisfied with current technology and its implementation... if you read the video implementation for the Nikon D90, you will know that it's really a gimmick more than a very useful feature. Also as the sensors heat up very fast with video, you get lots of noise and the video quality degrades... so there is a trade-off between image quality and FPS still at the consumer level... we're talking of convergence and at high quality... the next wave in photography/videography...

RED has shown the way, that it is possible to get stunning still image quality plus super high quality video with very good bokeh, DOF effects of an SLR in their hybrid system. The DSLR systems are the envy of many film makers cos of the very shallow DOF possible... the way digital video cameras are made, very shallow DOF can only be done using lots of tricks (meaning a lot of planning) and not inherently like what we get on full frame DSLRs... or even APS-C DSLRs.

Independent film makers are going to RED in droves cos it's pretty cost effective and and the videos produced by the RED are as good as the more expensive studio cameras which they can't afford. I believe Scarlet will be even cheaper with the same versatility as the RED ONE.

Why are you talking about sony? The image industry doesn't revolve around Sony soley but the 4 major players-SOny,JVC,Nikon and Canon. As to whether the Video feature on D90 is a gimmick or not, that's for you to write in to their marketing department.
The point is-Video has been incoporated into the consumer DSLR as oppose to what you said about waiting for Video technology to be seen in consumer DSLR.
Having said that, since Video technology has ALREADY been incorporated into DSLR and being marketed, all that is needed now is for them to refine it.The technology is there, they have the fundementals.
Your argument is totally null.Just because D90 or MKII doesn't have better Video quality and Sony feels that their CURRENT Video quality isn't up to their desired standard doesn't mean they don't posesse the technology.
Even the very fact that they are able to incorporate lousy video quality, stands that fact.
Sony, nikon and Canon have the technology.

So a person isn't a badminton player until he has partake in the olympic games right?Assuming we go by your warped logic.
In the past people built straw houses even when Mud houses is around. Is straw house a house then? After Mud houses came brick houses,so is Mud house considered a house? What is a house by your definition?
Scissor isn't a scissor until it's metal blade is being replaced with diamond?

And the basis of your argument is?
Get a grip

You just missed the points, mon ami...

Firstly, video has always been there in compact point and shoots... but it has never been seriously taken cos the image quality is pretty bad... likewise video cameras have always been able to take still images except that the resolution was usually very poor and the image quality worse than even compact point and shoots...

Secondly, there has never been an implementation of video in a digital still camera or vice-versa that was of any quality that would interest in a serious amateur, much less professionals. Hence the two categories have always been considered as two separate entities...

As I mentioned in the previous post, we're talking about high quality - something that is of the same standard as that from a dedicated still camera or dedicated video camera.

So in the past, anyone who wanted good quality video or photos will have to buy two expensive pieces of equipment and lug both around, especially if he's travelling... I'm sure you've seen people carrying both a camcorder and a DSLR around on holidays...

The exciting thing is that now RED has shown technically that it is possible to do so, converge the two categories. They have produced a camera which is equally good at video and still images. Something never achieved hitherto. (Did you know this???) And at a cost that is a fraction of either a current professional video camera (SONY) or a professional still camera (medium format). Hence you only need one device. And the device marries the best features of an SLR and the video camera... so this foreshadows the technology trickling down to the consumer level in the not too distant future... perhaps a time line of just 2-3 years (hopefully the economy doesn't behave too badly in the interim).

SONY are the market leaders in professional video equipment and they are the de facto standard for almost all the large Hollywood studios... Most of the Hollywood blockbusters you watch are shot by professional SONY video cameras... I raise SONY in this discussion cos even with their superior know-how with video cameras, they have been unable to implement the kind of video quality in still cameras that are to their satisfaction and hence did not implement it at present. Nikon has decided to forge ahead with a half-hearted attempt which has not been the attractive feature that perhaps Nikon was hoping for in their marketing...

Edit: I am not aware that Nikon makes professional video equipment...

Oh btw, if you read the link that Giorgio attached... the lowest price is a paltry US$2500 for a professional level product.... WOW! No wonder everyone has sat up and taken note... and also it's modular... first in the world I guess... can change mount some more!!!!

man.. it looks like a weapon. can it fire missiles?

Oh this thing looks innovative. Even allows u to add on and configure it. But looks expensive and bulky. heh, not for the faint hearted simple users like me :bsmilie:

First you said you wanted to see Sony,Canon and Nikon incorporate Video into consumer DSLR and after I've proved to you they did,you decide to use their lack of high quality Video as a smoke screen.

The thing is you don't read.$2500USD is merely the SENSOR.THE BRAIN BEHIND THE SILICON CHIP.

After that, you need the modular, lenses etc etc.
Do you still think it cost a mere $2500USD ONLY?
:bsmilie:

You're quite a quarrelsome fellow aren't you??? And since you must win the discussion right... hahaha... ok you win lar... and please quarrelsome people not welcome on the SONY board... if you read our threads, we're not really into winning arguments... we prefer to discuss the issue... so if you need to pick a fight, please do it somewhere else...

Yeah it looks very complicated... but I guess if this technology allows you to take very high quality video and still images in a very user-friendly package, it would be very attractive right? No need to lug a video cam and a DSLR around... no need to convert miniDV files...

I'm just waiting for such a product cos I need both in my journaling whenever I take a school trip with students... reduce the hassle of logistics and post-processing...

RED DSLR coming,,,
also a NIKON flagship coming too...
i think A900 price will drop at least 1/3;)

Eh, bor got lobang for lower res full frame or not??? I wait until neck long long leh...:bsmilie:

Indeed it is ! Few months back when I was packing for trip to Japan , was considering bringing both my miniDV and my P&S camera (i think its Sony H10 , cant rem the model). But i decided not to bring my DV as it will be too bulky to carry both equipment with different chargers and casing haha.

But it was that trip that spurred me to upgrade my H10 to DSLR cos my fren brought his D80 along , and I was full of envy throughout the trip .

Now i got my A350 , i pass my H10 to my gf :bsmilie:

But if in the near future , theres a product like red , that can give u best of both worlds , it is revolutionary . But I guess theres alot of consideration when you implement the technology to consumer use , things like cost , battery life , weight and product appearance appeal .

My biggest concern is battery life , it will be no good if I have a DSLR that can take good video but in turn , it cuts down my power significantly and end up I cant take picture ,

I guess its the same with convergence product like mobile phones , which can play mp3 , do PDA , take pictures and talk. If I am a hard core business man , I will probably only use PDA and the phone functions most of the time ,and will not use it to hear mp3 unless I can charge it often. End of the day , its really about targetting the right group of consumer with the kind of product.

I m sure RED probably has some ideas to attract certain market segment. It will be interesting to see if the other segments of the consumer and market would be lured as well.

Newly announced info here... plus pricing and commentary by an expert... very interesting that the complete low end Scarlet will cost only US$4000... that's the price of a 1D Mk.III I think... of course resolution is very low at 4.9 MP...
