I am not into mountain climbing, jungle tracking, etc., so can't recommend anything relating to nature. Been to KK more than 10 times over the years. There are many hotels in KK depending on your budget but the more popular ones are Promenade Hotel, Hyatt Hotel (abit old and rundown), Sutera Harbour, Le Meridien Hotel, Shangrila Tanjung Aru, etc. Promenade Hotel, 4-star, is very popular with Malaysians and Singaporeans. Sutera Harbour, 5-star is pricey, with excellent facilities. They have a golf course infront and a marina at the back. Le Meridien is the newest 5-star hotel there. All these hotels are situated in the town area. There are many shopping centres situated in the town centre i.e. Centrepoint, Warisan Square, Wisma Medeka (infront of Hyatt Hotel) and the newest and beautiful One Borneo. You can visit One Borneo using free shuttle bus service from Warisan Square or Promenade Hotel. OVer there, you can see many Sg brand retail outlets. One must visit place is the Sunday morning street market at Gaya Street where they sell all kinds of things like pets, fruits, food, clothing, antiques, etc. Food is pricey in KK especially those better established outlets along the seafront.
Thinking of going on 30th May for 3 nights or so. Am doubtful that would be enough for a climb up Mount Kinabalu, let alone an overnight stay there. Then, there's the Rafflesiana to see & a new butterfly park that was just opened.
The Sunday market sounds like a good idea too.
How is the local transportation like? Are taxi fares reasonable?
Yes!!! Go there during end of May, the official festival season for Sabah - Kotobian Tadau Kaamatan!
3 nights is too short for mt. climbing and to see Rafflesiana. The gaya street is definitely a must to see if you happen to be there on Sunday. Go in the early morning like 7~8am so you won't feel too hot. Taxi.... not much and no meter. Sorry can't advise on the fare because we sabahan hardly take public transport...
1 more thing, the perception of things / meals at Sabah being cheap is totally wrong. The cost could be same as KL. Please be aware of this, the meal, 4 or 5 star hotels can be mind-blowing and after converting to Sin dollar, it's about the same. Sutera harbour is mainly owned by Singapore company and also the authorised management agency for those nature tours. You can find nature touristic venue with them.
KK city ( or town) is not big. One can walk from east to west and back to east within a day. Some hotels provide free shuttle to shopping centres. I don't think you will buy branded stuffs there. Becasue either less variety or same price.
Go to KK, just enjoy the heat, sweat, nature.
Thanks for the suggestion.
So 3 nights not enough huh? Looks like I probably have to give up Mt K![]()
Can someone provide cheap and reliable package information on trekking Mt KK?
How do i get to Mahua falls?
The lonely planet guidebook says there is no public transport to the falls.
Will taxi go there? :dunno:
I'm also thinking if the falls are worth going or should I just spend the whole day at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands.
I'm already going to Mt K, staying at Kinabalu National Park 1 day and at Porong Hot Springs 1 day, then later going to Kinabatangan so will have a lot of this trekking, forest stuff.
Anyone been to the Rafflesia Reserve can comment on it?
LP guidebook says the rafflesia displays are "passable" and the reserve is of limited interest if none are in bloom. Doesn't sound very good huh. I do hope to see this flower. It is said, they can be sighted at Porong Hot Spring reserve if they are in bloom. Anyone knows when is the season for their blooming? Very hard to find information on their blooming; perhaps not well understood yet or got no particular time?
Hi there, i just went to Mahua Falls and the Rafflesia in May. Mmm.. my honest opinion is that the Mahua falls is not spectacular, not worth going all the way there to see it. If passing by and along the way, can consider going.
As for the rafflesia, if it is not in bloom, you will not see anything. I did not get to see any rafflesia except the 'cabbage' (the pre-bloom rafflesia) which looks like a 'chao da' cabbage, blackish colour one. So it was rather disappointing. Check if they're in bloom before going ba. I was told the blooming season is in October, you may wanna double confirm this.
As for the newly opened Kipandi butterfly park, it rained almost everyday that I was there so we decided to skip in since the butterflies will not be out anyways. :dunno:
Thanks for your input. The LP guide did not make these places sound very interesting too. As for checking the blooming, the guide says there's no reliable phone at the centre so cannot call in the check too. I guess I'll give these places a miss. Go for snorkelling at the island hopping instead...![]()
anyone climb to the summit before? is it difficult?
i'm gg this dec and i really want to make it to the top!
