Recommendations for a portable strobe

hi guys!

was away for the Lightenupandshoot workshop last weekend, Sat and Sun. it was awesome!! gotta try out the Phottix small strobe. 400w. Light and cool dudes! using at 1/1 most of the times during noon shoots. and the batt recharges quite fast...

Is this the one you're referring to and tried "Phottix PPL-400 400W Portable Strobe"...?:)

yes bro. it's quite light and can fit into the Westcott 28" easily..

thought the phottix has known issues?

I am using the Conomark version NID-50 with remote control. It's size is bigger , almost like the conventional strobe head. But the fact that u can remotely adjust the flash means you can do with less help on location.

Hi Jace,

mind to write a mini review on the different apsects of the NID 50? :)

I guess many will benefit from your review on it, given that you are a pro with lots of experience.

I am still learning. No one can ever be called a pro with this speed of change in today's society. I am also looking to learn from others.

I dont mind helping here and there but i am not technically incline. In fact, i got help from Sifu Eow. He has been helpful in all the technical aspects. He is the real master.

Personally i havent been able to optimise the NID50 as much as i like to. But i am already choosing this as the way to go because of the battery features. It certainly out performs any others that i know. More than 500 flashes and still going. It gives me a peace of mind knowing that i wont have the battery running flat. More over the size of the battery is the size of a large harddisk. Very manageable. However I wish the NID50 strobe head was like the DL4.0 in terms of size. This would increase the portability. But the main reason why i chose this over the DL4.0 was the remote control feature. It has A and B channel that allows you to put your light ratio at a touch of a button. Much like what profoto lights or Nikon CLS can do but a china version. The remote control is an important feature that a photographer should have (apart from voice controlled assistant). This is for speed. I am hoping to do more with this light especially if i have more light shapers tools to play with. I am also trying to configure it so that everything comes out of the carrying case in an almost complete, ready-to-mount-and-shoot situation.

Thats all for now. :) Love to hear what others are using too...

Also, something to note. The color temperature of this flash is a bit cold for my liking. The manufacturer already acknowledge this in their website. So far, flash wise, i find profoto ones makes a big difference...

Did a test sometime back. Yes, the Cononmk portable flash heads do have a cooler colour temperature similar to the speedlite. :) Camera WB set at 5400K.
