Thinking of converting my 550d to video, but not sure where to get the required rigs for it.

I think I might need a

1) Matte box
2) Hercules handle
3) Mic - maybe?
4) "Camera mounted light"? - not sure wads the proper term for this

Any is anyone using their Canon dslr for video?

nice. the shoulder rig seems over kill for me. my 550d abit small for the shoulder thing haha

the light looks nice, any idea if those matte box are "free size"? not really sure how is the matte box getting mounted onto the lens and if it will obstruct focusing

anyone used a matte box before?

Here's my recommendations, and how I shoot most of the time...

1) CF Cards
2) Canon Original Batteries
3) Most expensive tripod you can afford
4) Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or Canon 17-55mm f2.8
5) Primes (Canon 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8) (Sigma 35mm f1.4)

And that's all you really need. The LCD is good enough for focusing, by not adding anything to the DSLR, its easy to stabilize it with practice.

Of course if you need to look impressive go buy a Genus Mattebox and a monitor.

maybe i should get the 50 1.8

Try manual focusing on canon 50 1.8 first then buy.

U better off with the 1.4

The focal ring is right at the front, and very thin. Its more for shooting AF photos.
Not for pulling focus use.

You just need a bit of practice, its not that bad man... to begin with, if you're shooting an event, you have to go with practice and experience to focus.

After shooting video with the 5D extensively for the last one year, I find the 2 most important things u will need are the LCDVF which will helps u to gauge exposure in bright daylight conditions & ND filters to bring your shutter speed to around 1/50 when u are shooting at wide open aperture.

Some folks have tried using 2 polarising filters to create a variable ND filter. That will be a cheaper option than getting a set of ND filters 3, 6 & 9. personally, I find the shoulder mounts really cumbersome cuz it takes away the mobility & freedom of shooting with a DSLR.
