Recommendation For Printer

This is my take on printing at home using inkjets:

I shoot in film often using my EOS 888, although I own an EOS 300D. Whenever I send my film for developing and printing 3Rs, the prints from the labs (Kodak Express) sometimes turn out to be either too dark or too bright. Some photos turn out awful.

So I scan the negatives and look at them. The shots are actually nicer than what the prints show. Then I just print out using my mediocre Canon MPC200 (3-in-1 printer) and the prints turn out nicer than what those photo labs can give.

Perhaps it requires a bit of luck, or a bit of photoshop for colour correction. But most of the prints from my printer turn out better than lab prints even without photoshop. So I guess the variety of colours the inkjet can offer seem to surpass that which a photolab has. Correct me if I'm wrong. Not sure if anyone had the same experience as me.

OT: Sehsuan, this year Education Officers got PB or not?

Kodak Express don't give very nice prints. coz they do then digitally. if you are a film user, look for film developers. go try Stanley Lim Colour Center. I let them develop all my films. very nice sharp solid prints. the print colours are more "Live"

Went to Epson Solutions Center, Funan. Enquired about the R210, seems to give good prints, 6 colors individual cartridge ... BUT ... the price of the cartridges, on the high side (for me), $20+/- for each color cartridge.

My opinion of a home printer - reasonably good prints, 4800x1400 or better. Consumables must not be too expensive as this is a recurring cost. Seems like most manufacturers sell the printer at an affordable price, but charge a lot for the consumables.

What about Canon, are their ink cartridges cheaper? Or third party ink, are they comparable to the originals in terms of color?

Thanks
Actually, all the 6 carts for the R210/R310 is $18.50 each. Checked the price with South Asia, and PK. At the IT show, they were selling at $16.30 per cart.

The result-wise, ask Astin the quality of the pics I gave him. (Clue: he thought it was professionally printed ;) )

Hi Nokin,

I'm sure you'll be quite happy printing your digital photos at home (in fact I'm printing some A3 prints now as I'm typing). The quality of desktop inkjet printers are extremely good, and the race is now on to produce the best printers at a reasonable price.

It's important to consider the running costs when buying a photo printer. Individual ink tanks is probably the best innovation, since different colours run out at different times. I prefer the Canon Think Tanks for 2 reasons (on top and above the fact that they are the originators) - transparent ink tanks that confirm the tanks are empty when you discard them, and no ink cartirdge computer chips to screw you around.

I think you can get Think Tank cartridges at about $15.90 from any of the dealers at Sim Lim or Funan. If you wanna save on original supplies, get third party papers, not the inks. If the third-party inks leak in your printer, you're really gonna pay for it.

The larger the print size, the cheaper it is to print at home (compared to the labs). Hope this helps!

One thing that is seldom sold as an epson advantage and unknown is that u can extend your warranty by 2 yrs with Epson. Covers parts and labour. It also converts your current 1 yr warranty to onsite.

Very reasonable for consumer printers 60-100 dollars only.

I find it useful becoz it safeguards you from permanent clogs and damaged print heads.

Watcher,

what is the qty of prints you are getting out of those new individual epson ink cartridges? Any estimate?

Including the initial charge which consumes a substantial amount of ink, I had printed 4-5 A4s (borderless) and a dozen 10x15 picts. The inks in %
K C M Y Cp Mp is 82,83,77,72,81,72. I guess I can print like another 20 A4s and another 2 dozen 10x15s before I need to change the Y and Mp

That is pretty good life span. Hope u can update us when u first change the ink carts.

BTW which model did you get and any ink clogs yet?

No prob

I got the el-cheapo R210 which came free with a cordless phone and the 1-2-3 D I eBook at the IT Show. I'm going to sell both and get the printer <$200 :D . No clog since I installed it on Friday. Been printing daily with no problems at all. So quiet, I have to look at the blinking light to know that the printing is going on.

You really need to find a good lab and develop a workflow using one or two films. It helps if you are friends with the lab operators / owners as well.

Hmmm.... all the 3 shops around my neighbourhood are owned by old aunties... the Fujifilm one gave me photos with weird colour casts (I posted a reddish one here before), the Kodak one gave me too bright or too dark prints... now left only a Konica one.... will try that shop soon.... If results are still bad I might consider sending all my films to a reputable shop regardless of distance.
